One Pieceis a story filled with twists and turns where Eiichiro Oda leaves behind some hints for fans to decipher. It’s like one of those mystery-solving shows in which the killer thinks they’re so smart that they leave trails for the detective to come find them.

However, Oda is the type of guy who doesn’t go for the obvious plotlines. He may even bait you into thinking, “Yeah, this is leading to this,” but then brings this Earth-shattering twist that could change the whole story forever!
One of the most popular theories out there is Kuzan betraying Blackbeard and fans now are wondering whether it’ll happen at all.

The signs of Kuzan betraying Blackbeard
The first instance is the inspiration behind Kuzan himself. Kuzan seems to be based on a real life Japanese actor who is known to play untrustworthy characters.
Kuzan is heavily inspired by Yusaku Matsuda, a famous Japanese actor known for portraying morally ambiguous characters who often face dilemmas of loyalty and betrayal.pic.twitter.com/giVerXN5Po

Like Matsuda, Kuzan wrestles with redemption. Betraying Blackbeard could be his way of righting the wrongs he allowed to happen by joining the pirates.
There is a trope in literature of characters who infiltrate enemy ranks ultimately betrays them at a critical moment.

Take Harry Potter for example. Severus Snape was once a death eater and a loyal servant of Voldemort. Then Dumbledore came and told him that he still has a conscience inside, telling him to give up Voldemort’s side and come to Hogwards to redeem himself.
Due to his queer behavior and looks coupled with his past, Snape was always portrayed as a villain who can always give up Dumbledore’s company anytime. And Harry thought exactly that when Snape killed Dumbledore in Half-blood Prince only for him to find out it was Dumbledore’s plan all along for Snape to regain Voldemort’s trust and infiltrate from the inside.

Similarly,Eiichiro Odamight be using that trope and make Kuzan (Snape) side with Garp (Dumbledore) after betraying Blackbeard (Voldemort) in the end. Kuzan might be secretly supporting Garp, but he appears ready to sacrifice him to gain Teach’s trust. Just as Snape killed Dumbledore to fool Voldemort, fans wonder whether Kuzan’s assault on Garp is part of a greater plan to take down Blackbeard.

Speaking of Teach, he himself is no stranger to betrayal. He murdered Thatch to steal the Yami Yami no Mi. It would be a fitting and poetic twist if Kuzan betrays him when he least expects it. This would mirror Teach’s own treacherous rise to power, making his downfall all the more satisfying.
Additionally, Teach commands the 10 Titanic captains, and fans know that an iceberg sank the Titanic in real life. This could parallel Kuzan’s ice powers, which seem almost symbolic in this case, suggesting that he could be the force that ultimately sinks Blackbeard’s pirates.
There’s also another facet to Blackbeard, which fans would love to hear about.
Blackbeard is based on the historical pirate Edward Teach, a ruthless and cunning figure. Some of Teach’s own crewmembers betrayed him and provided testimony that led to his downfall. Will Kuzan follow this path and become the key to bringing down Marshall D. Teach?pic.twitter.com/DAXyXwtTqa
Finally, the way Oda positions Kuzan next to Blackbeard seems odd. And fans think that’s another sign that Kuzan might be betraying the Emperor.
Oda drew all the admirals in similar poses, each one facing their respective enemies.Yet, when it comes to Kuzan, he’s positioned facing the Blackbeard Pirates. Could this be a sign that Kuzan sees Blackbeard as the true enemy and not an ally?pic.twitter.com/zrQQPSTZig
While all these theories seem really convincing, fans on Reddit are of the opinion that all these clues seem too obvious.
Oda loves to debunk fan theories and expectations
Given Oda’s track record of not going into the simpler, straight-forward routes, they think it might not actually happen.
However, another fan thinks that Kuzan betraying Blackbeard will happen. But the way it’ll happen will shock everyone and that’s when Oda will use his tendency to subvert everyone’s expectations.
Blackbeard and Teach are one ofOne Piece‘s smartest characters and it’s more than likely that they’d see Kuzan’s betrayal coming. So Oda has to come up with a way to make Kuzan even smarter. And that’d surely be a task. AsOne Pieceheads towards the much-awaited Elbaf arc, Oda promises fans more exciting adventures, thrills, and, of course, new revelations!
One Pieceis available to watch on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
