Barbiestar Margot Robbie could not accept the Academy Awards snubbing Greta Gerwig for the Best Director category. The phenomenal movie earned eight Oscar nominations, though the lead actress was shockingly excluded from the list of Best Actress.

Regardless, Robbie is not bitter about her own loss, though she has expressed disappointment that Gerwig was left out of the roster.Barbieemerged as the top-grossing film of 2023, earning over $1.44 billion in global ticket sales, so it’s definitely a shame it did not bag the majority of the awards.
Margot Robbie Looks At The Bright Side Despite Oscar Snub
Margot Robbieattended the special Screen Actors Guild screening in Los Angeles with her co-stars and toldDeadlinethatGreta Gerwigshould have been up there on the list of Best Director for the Oscars.
“There’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed. Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director, because what she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing, what she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films.”

Indeed, Gerwig’s work on the film was something that Hollywood celebrated in the previous year. Apart from the box office profit, it became a cultural phenomenon that united fans all over the world and celebrated individuality in the most creative way.
Still, Robbie isn’t wallowing in the loss; theSuicide Squadstar chooses to focus her energy on how the film left an impact on our present culture.

“I just suspect it’s bigger than us. It’s bigger than this movie, it’s bigger than our industry. We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact, and it’s already done that, and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. And that is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.”
The actress shared that she hid in movie theater bathrooms just to listen to people’s reactions. She recalled that time she went to a pub and overheard a bunch of men discussingBarbie. After a couple of their friends claimed it was a “cultural moment” they decided to watch it.

Will There Be ABarbieSequel?
In the same speech viaDeadline, Margot Robbie singled out her performance inBarbieas something she had never done before. Sure, she starred in a couple of comic book films, likeSuicide SquadandBirds of Prey, and they certainly drew a lot of reactions and criticisms, butBarbiewas something else.
“I’ve never been a part of something like this. Not like this. I’ve done comic book stuff, and that gets a big reaction, but this felt very different. It still feels very different. And I can’t think of a time when a movie’s had this effect on culture. And it’s amazing to be in the eye of the storm.”

Because of the movie’s success, it’s easy to see why there’s an anticipation for a sequel. When asked about a potential follow-up, Robbie toldTime:
“It could go a million different directions from this point, but I think you fall into a bit of a trap if you try and set up a first movie whilst also planning for sequels.”
With that statement, fans should not expect anotherBarbieinstallment in the near future. There’s been talks of a possibleKenspinoff, but this is merely speculation.
