Yesterday, news emergedvia PC Gamerthat Ubisoft has been sending out warnings to players that their accounts will be suspended and even permanently deleted for “inactivity” if they don’t log in within 30 days. The news spread like wildfire, and it was widely suggested that players’ Ubisoft games libraries were at risk of deletion, meaning players could losing access to hundreds of dollars worth of purchased games permanently.

We reached out to Ubisoft for clarity on this issue, and a spokesperson told us that “account deletion follows a very strict process” that takes into account four criteria, with one of those criteria being “the account’s libraries: accounts that include purchased PC games are not eligible for deletion.”

The other criteria include the gaming activity on the account, the duration of inactivity, and the existence of an active subscription on the account. Regarding the duration of inactivity, the spokesperson added, “In practice, as of today, we have never deleted accounts that have been inactive for less than 4 years.” But regardless of those other criteria, the key point here is that if you have any purchased games in your library, then your account isn’t eligible for deletion.

So yes, while Ubisoft does delete accounts for inactivity, which they say is “in compliance with the requirements of the GDPR (Article 5.1.e on the obligation to limit the data retention period),” it appears that they arenotdeleting games libraries, which was the key point of contention for the gaming community over the past 24 hours.

Looking through the Twitter responses to this news, it appears that one Twitter user, Ponpon, lost access to their account, though based on what they said it’s hard to tell whether this was because of the aforesaid ‘inactivity’ or some other reason. The Ubisoft Support Twitter responded to Ponpon, offering to help recover the account.

We haven’t found further evidence that Ubisoft is deleting accounts containing purchased games, and they have now stated that such accounts are exempt from being deleted due to inactivity.

If, however, you feel your account (with a games library) has been wrongly deleted by Ubisoft, then let us know at editors@dualshockers.com.
