The Marvel Cinematic Universe has continued to grow in recent years with new characters and storylines emerging on the film and streaming side of things. Despite its relative downturn in form, the franchise has always been fertile ground for theory crafting. However, not all these theories always pan out and some have aged poorly.

One of these theories, that aged badly, involves Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine, with fans arguing that he is responsible for giving Josh Brolin’s Thanos the scars on his face. However, this isn’t the only MCU theory about Thanos that has aged like milk as several others fall under a similar category. Here are five MCU theories about the purple monster that did not age well.
5Thanos Was an Acronym
When Thanos was first introduced in the post-credits ofThe Avengers, his goals and motivations were unclear. However, it was quickly established that the villain, played byJosh Brolinwas after the Infinity Stones. As the locations of these stones were revealed, fans realized a pattern.

Fansspeculatedthat Thanos was an acronym that hinted at their whereabouts. It was argued that the name stood for T-Tesseract (Space Stone), A-Aether (Reality Stone), N-Necklace (Time Stone), O-Orb (Power Stone), and S-Scepter (Mind Stone). As a result, it was speculated the letter H would be linked with Soul Stone’s location, which did not turn out to be true.
4Thanos Wasn’t the Big Bad
Thanos was the ultimate big bad of the Infinity Saga and there was never really an argument about it. The villain’s grand plan was slowly set up throughout multiple movies and his backstory was also the primary focus ofAvengers: Infinity War.
However, that did not stop some fans from speculating that Thanos being the big bad was a major red herring, especially because of the focus on his actions. Fans hadtheorizedthat Thanos would ultimately be a stepping stone with a bigger threat like Annihilus or some other comic book villain proving to be the ultimate big bad of the saga.

3Thanos and Hela Romance
When Hela, played by Cate Blanchett, was first introduced inThor: Ragnarok, she proved too formidable for the God of Thunder. Moreover, several aspects of the character’s comic book story were changed for the big screen adaptation, the key being that the MCU’s Hela was the Goddess of Death.
Giventhe connection between Thanos and Deathin the comics, fans put two and two together andarguedthat Hela would be the stand-in for Death in the MCU. As a result, Thanos and Hela are poised to have a romance, which did not pan out as Brolin’s Thanos had different motivations from his comic book counterpart.

2Thanos Killing Captain America
Thanos was always destined to come face-to-face with the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and fans were looking forward to him battling Steve Rogers / Captain America because of the drastic difference in power between the two. As a result, fans also theorized that the duel would end withChris Evans‘ character dying.
The fan theory almostprovedto be true as concept art for Thanos decapitating Captain America was developed forAvengers: Endgame. However, the directors deemed the moment too dark and it was scrapped. Instead, fans got the most rip-roaring moment when Captain America went up against Thanos which induces goosebumps even today.

1The Uncanny Way to Beat Thanos
WhenAvengers: Infinity Warfinally rolled out, fans were left devastated when the film ended with the heroes narrowly losing the battle against the Mad Titan. As a result, fans quickly began speculating how the heroes would turn over the deficit, leading to some interesting ways to defeat Thanos.
MCU Theory: Robert Downey Jr’s Doom is the Missing Illuminati of Earth-838
The most populartheorythat cropped up about Thanos’ defeat involvedPaul Rudd’s Ant-Man. Fans had theorized that Thanos would ultimately be defeated by Ant-Man who would shrink and enter the purple monster’s anus before expanding and decimating the villain. Of course, such an idea was always too outlandish for the MCU.
The MCU movies and TV shows are streaming on Disney+.
