Nightingaleis set in a veritable multiverse of different planes of existenceinspired by fairiesand other whimsical folklore-style elements. If you have played one or two games from this genre, there are a lot of staples you will already be accustomed to in the game. Nightingale isdefinitely one of the most enchantingand surreal entities in the genre, but it can be broken down into various fundamental facts that can help you survive and thrive.

10 Best Survival Games

Survival games can be scary, challenging, or relaxing, and they offer an experience like no other. Check out our list of the best in the genre.

As you progress through the game, you will be able to craft new tools and items, build new structures at your base, and face off against plenty of creatures that range from interesting to complete eldritch nightmares. You will also be exploring different areas that take everything you know about the term “biome” and willdevelop them into entirely different planes of existence— some serene, some abysmal, and some you will fear returning to.

10Gather Resources Efficiently

Pressing & Holding Affects How You Gather

When you wish to chop down a tree or mine some stone, you can press and hold down the button to repeat the action of chopping or mining. However, there is a short delay before each time you swing. Pressing the button at the right time allows you to speed up this task by performing your next swing earlier than if you were to hold down the button.

Another nifty bit of information is that you can gather several items in the area instead of picking them up individually. Pressing E on the keyboard will allow you to pick up a single item, but holding it down will perform a mass pickup of everything in the nearby vicinity. This means you can focus on chopping down several trees and do some mining, then pick everything up at once.

9Preemptively Avoid Weather Conditions

Umbrellas Are Not Just For Gliding

The game features many different weather conditions you will need to be aware of. The game features rain and hail, and without an umbrella, you will suffer negative effects from both. Rain will cause you to get wet, which will slow down how fast you regenerate stamina — and you will need a fire to dry off. Hail is even worse as it will damage your equipment.

This is not just bad for your character, but for your crafting stations as well. Leaving a workbench outside will cause it to become worse for wear and make it harder to craft with. So be sure to keep your workstations indoors.

8You Can Play In Third Person

Change Your Perspective

When you start the game, you will default in first-person perspective. This is a staple perspective for the genre, but the game does not force this upon you. You are able to change this perspective at any time you wish by pressing F5 on the keyboard (default). It is important to really enjoy a game, especially ones that you can get really pulled into with an immersive experience.

10 Best Survival Co-Op Games

From Don’t Starve Together to Minecraft and Rust, these survival titles offer an excellent co-op experience.

If a third-person perspective enhances your personal experience, you really should switch between the two in the earlier parts of the game to get a feel for which you prefer — or even alternate between the two. You may prefer third person while base-building and first person while engaging in combat.

7Think Before You Build

You Lose Resources For Breaking Structures

There is no refund option when it comes to getting your resources back if you want to change the layout of your base. Once something is constructed, you will need to destroy it if you want to clear it away. Destroyed structures will drop far less than what was put in to construct it. So, be always mindful of where you plan to build, and don’t be reckless with your resources.

The game actually lets you place blueprints of floors, walls, and everything else you might want to build without consuming resources. You can use this to plan out your entire house before committing to using any resources.

6Umbrella Terminology For Resources

Crafting Recipes Can Use Different Materials

This might be a little confusing for some players. In a survival crafting game, you get specific recipes for specific resources. For Nightingale, recipes in the game will use an umbrella term so that you can select from various types of the same resource. Instead of Chicken Meat and Lamb Meat, you will simply get “Meat” with a descriptor like “Tier 1 Prey” in parentheses to its right. When you cook meat, there will be a recipe for “Roast Meat” that will affect all “Meat” in the same way — with each one having different benefits.

The same can be said for the tools that you make. Changing the type of wood you use when crafting can affect what the stats of the crafted tool will have. You will have the option to Autofill when crafting, but it is recommended that you manually perform these tasks if you wish to save certain resources for certain items.

5Pick Up Everything

Essence Dust Is Essential

One of the biggest hurdles players face in survival games is becoming over-encumbered or running out of inventory space. Nightingale has a rather interesting resource called Essence Dust that you will want to gather a lot of and can help you whenever you face this obstacle. In order to get Essence Dust, all you will need to do is open your inventory, right-click on an object you do not need, and select “Extract.”

This can be done for all of your tools that you no longer need after crafting better ones, but it also means you can pick up absolutely every single resource you come across whenever you become over-encumbered — then you can extract the excess for Essence Dust. You will be needing a lot of Essence Dust as you progress and will be glad you did.

4Falling Trees Can Destroy Structures

Be Mindful Of Where Your Base Is

When you chop away at a tree, it does not just burst up into resources. It will actually make a creaking sound and begin to give way. When this happens, everything surrounding this tree is at risk.

It is best to completely flatten an area of trees before you wish to build your base, as doing this in the other order could have these falling trees destroying all the hard work you put in to make your base. Giving a recruit an ax will cause them to go off and start chopping down trees, so do not give them an ax if there are trees around your base.

3You Can Split Stacks

Store What You Don’t Need

You may want to keep some items on you and place the rest into one of your storage options. If you have 50 of an item and want to put exactly 42 of them into a chest, all you need to do is hold down the shift key and then move the item over to the chest — this will cause a prompt to display.

This prompt will show you the total amount of the items you have under Quantity. Below these options will be a white bar with a diamond slider on the far right side. Click and drag this slider back, and it will decrease the Quantity of the stack being transferred over to its new destination — leaving behind the rest.

2Hit Enemies In Weakspots

Headshots Have Several Bonuses

It is a pretty common practice to include weak points for enemies, and one of the most commonly used approaches for this is getting a headshot. Headshots do more than just reward you with some extra damage; they can also stun enemies to give you a chance to reposition — and also reduce how many times they attack you in a set amount of time.

You will know you have landed a headshot when the damage number changes from red to yellow. Another weak point is shooting an enemy directly in the heart — the window for this is much smaller but can result in more damage than even a headshot.

1You Cannot Mix Predator & Prey

You Will Need Enough Of The Same Type

You will find both Predator and Prey options for various different resources in the game. You will see these two types when you look through your different Meats for cooking, but also for the different Hides when making something like Leather.

Both Predator and Prey options will each offer different bonuses depending on which one you used, but unfortunately, you will not be able to mix the two together. You will need to gather enough of the same kind of material to use in your crafting recipe. This helps maintain a sense of balance and helps the item focus on being used for a specific goal.
