One of the many things that have gotten fans excited about DC is the various Elseworlds projects that are outside of the DCU that James Gunn has allowed to continue. One such project is Matt Reeves’ plannedBatmantrilogy.

However, the delay for the next installment has been something that has irked fans for a while, and there have been a lot of speculations about why the film is delayed. According to Gunn’s last update, the DCU’sBatmanfilm does not have a script yet. However, given thatThe Batman: Part IIhas been in the works for a long time, fans have been speculating that the film might be finding its way into the DCU. But there might be one other reason that might be holding the film back.
The Batman: Part IImight be taking some time to translate Mister Freeze to the Reeves-verse
Matt Reeves’ Batman-verse is set to be grounded and realistic, not bringing in Batman’s more science-fiction adjacent villains. However, the franchise might get creative with how it grounds these characters in reality, and that might be the very reason why the film is taking so long. Mister Freeze is a character that leans hard into the science-fiction side of things when it comes to the DC Universe.
Only 3 valid reasons why The Batman Part 2 is delayed:• They didn’t want to compete with Tom Cruise’s movie• Mr. Freeze is hard to incorporate in the story• Matt Reeves agreed to join James Gunn’s DC universe and merge with Superman, World’s Finest is on the waypic.twitter.com/DYW9mIFKGD

While they translate the character into live-action, there have also been rumors that Matt Reeves’Batmanmight be looking to join the DCU. Although Reeves has made it clear that he does not want to join James Gunn’s shared universe, there have been a lot of calls for that exact thing, given howRobert Pattinson‘s version of Batman seems to fit right into the universe thatSuperman.

Another reason that fans believe that this date could be shifted is because 2nd October 2026 has become the the release date for an untitled Tom Cruise film (viaIndieWire), which could possibly hamper the chances ofThe Batman Part IImaking a splash at the box office.
Matt Reeves’ Batman should not join the DCU
While it might feel that Superman from the DCU and Robert Pattinson’s Batman could exist in the same universe, it might not be the right choice for the respective characters. Robert Pattison’s Batman is young and would have to cycle through all his Robins if Damien is to be involved, as was the case withBrave and the Bold. However, Gunn has said that just because a project is announced it cannot be canceled or reworked, which would giveMatt Reeve‘s Batman an insight into the universe.
Batman and its universe have a good thing going, with its distinct flavor and more grounded storytelling. Matt Reeves has a lot more freedom with his own little franchise, which might be stifled with the DCU.

James Gunn would be wise to keep the Elseworlds away from the mainline DCU, giving fans more options to enjoy. While Gunn has been known to cancel competing products, no matter how well they are received (such as Superman & Lois), the director might no better than do damage as lucrative an IP as Reeve’s Batman.
Supermanhits theatres on July 30, 2025.
The Batman Part IIhas been delayed to 2027.
