Level-5 published a brand new trailer forMegaton Musashiahead of Jump Festa 2020. The trailer goes over what we know about the game’s story. It’s set in the future where the earth was colonized by bad aliens called the Dractor. The survivors fled to underground shelters, and fight against the aliens using “Megaton-Class” mechas, hence the full name of the game in Japanese:Megaton-Class Musashi.
The trailer mentionsMegaton Musashiis a “Cooperative Robot Action RPG”. It’s currently unclear whether if the game can also be played solo with allies controlled by the AI or not. The trailer mentions online co-op battles against giant Dractor enemies and mecha customization.
The trailer also introduced us to three mecha in the game and their pilots:
It’s important to note the seiyuu for Yamato, Teru, and Ryuugo changed over time. Back when the game was first revealed in 2016, they were respectively voiced byMazakazu Morita,Miyu Irino, andTatsuhisa Suzuki. These three are highly popular and costly seiyuu, but the new ones are extremely popular as well, so it’s just a guess, but it shouldn’t be a money problem. Instead, the change is probably a consequence of the various delays and development changesMegaton Musashiwent through. Personally speaking, while I liked the old cast too, I’m pretty happy with the new cast, seeing Toshiki Masuda, Soma Saito, and Shunsuke Takeuchi all voice characters in thePretty Rhythm/King of Prismfranchise, one of my favorite anime.
The game’s overall atmosphere, from the illustration of the characters, or even the trailer’s video editing itself, feels much more aggressive overall compared to what we’ve seen in the past:
For comparison’s sake, here’s above the firstMegaton Musashivisuals we got in 2016. Meanwhile, the new look revealed in the new trailer gives off a similar vibe to Hiroyuki Imaishi and Studio Trigger related anime, such asGuren Lagann, Kill la Kill, or the studio’s greatest masterpiece,Turning Girls. You can also see how the game interface changed. The space suits and how each mecha is piloted by three pilots seem to be ditched ideas.
Megaton Musashiwasfirst announced in July 2016and was supposed to launch in 2017. However, similarly toYo-kai Watch 4or the nextInazuma Elevengame, it was delayed many, many times.Level-5 president Akihiro Hino explainedhow the company is changing to avoid such delays from occurring again.
Megaton Musashiis a joint project between Level-5 and Weekly Shonen Jump. Just like other Level-5 franchises,Megaton Musashiis also supposed to be a multi media franchise with an anime adaptation. However, we never heard about the anime version since the pilot released in July 2016.
Megaton Musashiwill be featured at Jump Festa 2020,on December 21-22. A demo of the Switch version of the game will be playable at Level-5’s booth. It’ll be the first time ever the game is playable. A giant balloon of the Musashi mecha will be on the stand, and trying out the demo will net you a Musashi mini cardboard stand.
Megaton Class Musashiis coming to PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android. The game has no release date estimate.
