Lackluster female characters are among the biggest criticisms of theNarutoseries.Borutoturned out to be somewhat of an improvement on that front with strong female characters like Sarada and Himawari. These two young girls have showcased immense potential and courage even in the face of death. Both of them enjoy dedicated fanbases with their fans always waiting for their favorite characters’ big moments.

Sometimes, these two groups also engage in debates over who is the better or more important character between Sarada and Himawari. Masashi Kishimoto might have answered for once and for all, and his answer might be bad news for Himawari fans.
Masashi Kishimoto Confirms the Female Lead inBoruto
From the beginning ofBoruto, Sarada has maintained a strong presence in the story. She has inherited the talents and skills of both her parents and is exceptional in many ways. Her strength is clear proof of her natural talent combined with her ability to understand things quickly. Similarly, Himawari is the child of Naruto and Hinata. Her parents’ clans were renowned for their extremely strong and distinctive abilities. These abilities are present in Himawari as well, granting her great powers.
Boruto Can Redeem the Biggest Mistake of Masashi Kishimoto in Naruto That He Himself Confessed: ‘It was difficult for me to understand’
Their strength and their association with the main characters have made fans question who the female lead ofBorutois between both the characters. During an interview (via translation on X),Masashi Kishimotosettled this debate with his opinion on the subject. Admitting that he often faces difficulties with his female characters, Kishimoto expressed his approval of Ikemoto’s handling of Sarada’s character. Kishimoto described Sarada as the main female character inBoruto.
With the creator’s confirmation, there’s barely any room left for discussion. Sarada has kept up with all the events in the series and maintained her position as a crucial part of the storyline. While this revelation from Kishimoto himself is quite disheartening for Himawari fans, the current events ofBoruto: Two Blue Vortextell a different tale.

Concerns All Over for Himawari’s Character Development inBoruto
Kishimoto’s confirmation that Sarada is the main female character solidifies her presence in the series. So, her character arc is bound to be a priority. This might mean that Himawari might never get her time to shine in the series. However, there’s a huge shift in Sarada’s character inTwo Blue Vortex. Initially, she was an integral part of the story.
With Kawaki’s introduction, the focus has shifted to the rivalry between Kawaki and Boruto. As a result of this, Sarada’s character arc has been somewhat sidelined. On the other hand, Himawari is gaining more prominence with her involvement with the villains. Jura has taken a special interest in her because of Kurama’s chakra. Moreover, she has been shown to be extremely compatible with Kurama’s chakra.

Her strong will sets her apart from the others. Even though her character arc finally became a focal point in the story quite recently, she has undergone immense growth. With Kurama’s chakra and Jura, the future looks hopeful for Himawari. This assumption might prove to be a little optimistic when one considers the track record of the female characters in the series.
Boruto’s Biggest Flaw is Why Masashi Kishimoto Can Never Create Another Naruto
Given how talented both Himawari and Sarada are, it’s disappointing that they can’t grow simultaneously. The character development of one is considered at the cost of the other. The current events of the manga allow enough room for both of them to shine, but the creators are wasting great potential by putting these characters on the backburner.
