There have been a lot of roles that have been elevated by the brilliance of Carrie Fisher. While most casual fans know her as Princess Leia, the actress has a very storied work history in Hollywood. One such role has her starring in a film with Tom Hanks, this being her second time co-starring with the actor.
Fisher displayed a lot of her improvisation skills in this film, which delivered some of the film’s most entertaining bits. In light of Fisher’s passing in 2016, LA Weekly reached out toThe ‘Burbsdirector Joe Dante to talk about how Carrie elevated the film with her unique wit and acting abilities.

Joe Dante, the director ofThe ‘Burbs, talked toLA Weeklyabout a lot of things, but chiefly howCarrie Fisherwas an integral part of the production, and how she elevated it with her unique take on her character and her lines. Fisher, allegedly, delivered some of the film’s golden moments while improvising on set, which she did a lot withTom Hanks. Dante revealed:
We decided to shoot in sequence since we were confined to one location, and a great deal of the dialog was improvised. Bruce Dern and Rick Ducommon came up with some great stuff but the majority of the improvs were between Tom and Carrie.
The breakfast scene (“he’s a hydrocephalic”) and the game show scene (the Jeopardy! questions) and their final conversation are sequences that improved exponentially, often on the first take.
Fisher’s Carol Peterson was a highlight character in the film, someone a lot of fans could relate to and think about. The character was in stark contrast to the other characters that Carrie Fisher had taken on, such as Princess Leia or the Mystery Woman fromThe Blue Brothers.

Carrie Fisher had been critical of the costume in her later years, believing that series creator George Lucas was playing a prank on her when it was first revealed to her. The costume was not her style, as she revealed toFresh Air:
I have to stay with the slug with the big tongue! Nearly naked, which is not a style choice for me. … It wasn’t my choice. When [director George Lucas] showed me the outfit, I thought he was kidding and it made me very nervous.
Carrie Fisher revealed more about her time on the set ofStar Warsin her book, The Princess Diarist, which was a published version of a journal she kept while shooting the threeStar Warsfilms.
