League of Legendsis a 2009 online battle arena showing no sign of slowing down in 2024. Its charismatic lore has even inspired the popular animated seriesArcane, which is set to debut its second and final season this year on Netflix. While the series pulls more of the uninitiated into the player pool, developerRiotis devising a plan to satisfy the game’s loyal but aging demographic.
In April, Riot announced a newBullet Heaven PVE modethat will be released during the game’s mid-year event this summer. It’s expected that the new mode will not be a permanent edition, but it’s said to operate the same way as Vampire Survivors and players can tackle hordes alone or with friends.

Long-Term League Of Legends Players Want Balanced Gameplay After Their 9-5
During a Q&A session at Summer Game Fest (ThanksPC Gamer), game director Pu Liu and studio head Andrei van Roon acknowledged the battle arena’s dedicated player pool that’s remained loyal to the game for well over a decade and how “it’s certainly true that our audience is aging up”. However, Liu stated that this inevitability was not “inherently a bad thing”.
Despite the intrigue around Arcane, League is not pulling in new players at the same speed as ten years ago. Liu explained “Candidly, it’s not the same situation it was 10 years ago, where you’re in middle school or high school and [League] is the game everyone’s talking about, that everyone’s playing.” Additionally, the director admitted, “There’s a lot of other games that we’re competing with now.”

During League’s longevity, Van Roon noted very few players played ranked at launch, then competitive play increased within the middle years. However, the Riot devs are very aware that the long-term fans need more of a balance now, saying “Now for some of our audience—especially those that now have jobs or kids or whatever—we’re seeing some more shift towards ‘Hey, I want to be competitive some of the time and I want other experiences as well.'”
Liu expressed that the team was “very cognizant of the improvement that we need to make moving into the future”, and Van Roon confirmed Riot is “very much trying to broaden” League’s catalog of modes to accommodate the aging demographic of long-term players.

Van Roon emphasized the shift during the 2010s from “having fun with my friends to sweaty swearing in ranked queue until I quit for my own wellbeing”, but the older demographic at present seems to favor a more laid-back gaming experience within League after adulting all day.
