Having worked in all three seasons prior toNight Country, the Issa López-led season was the first entry in the series that Nic Pizzolatto had no input in, despite having a credit as executive producer. And Pizzolatto isn’t being oblique with his distaste for the new direction, as the writerexpressedhe “did not have any input on this story or anything else, “as he replied to a fan’s comment.Responding to theTrue Detectivecreator speaking ill about the new season, López, who directed all six episodes ofNight Country, expressed that he is entitled to his opinion.

Speaking with Vulture, the director stressed that she wrote the story with profound love as she acknowledged its difference from the stuff that has come before.
“I believe that every storyteller has a very specific, peculiar, and unique relation to the stories they create, and whatever his reactions are, he’s entitled to them. That’s his prerogative,”López said.“I wrote this with a profound love for the work he made and love for the people that loved it. And it is a reinvention, and it is different, and it’s done with the idea of sitting down around the fire, and [let’s] have some fun and have some feelings and have some thoughts. And anybody that wants to join is welcome.”
