The mysteries inThe Apothecary Diariesmight take the front seat but the romance is never dead. Even without the slow-burn romance of Maomao and Jinshi, there are two characters whose fates were woven so intricately yet tragically together. Despite the horrible actions of Fengxian and the absenteeism of Lakan, both towards Maomao, the ending of Season 1 ofThe Apothecary Diariestugged at our heartstrings.

There is one aspect about Lakan that many fans might be forgetting and it makes his reunion with Fengxian after years of being apart all the more romantic.
Despite being a military tactician, Lakan suffers from face blindness and he has a specific way of seeing people too. It’s a rare cognitive disorder called prosopagnosia that makes it difficult for him to recognize faces but there are two people he has never once forgotten, his lover and his daughter. However, the way he remembers Fengxian is even more beautiful than fans might realize.

Lakan Still Remembers Fengxian The Way She Was
The story of Lakan and Fengxian is one of true love and tragedy. He initially was her enthusiastic patron in her days as a Courtesan but the two used to engage in games of Go at House Verdigris instead of the typical Courtesan activities. They fell in love with each other and she even risked her job. However, her pregnancy and Lakan’s unfortunate exile came at the same time. He only returned 3 years later, unaware of their child, and with her pregnancy, she wasn’t wanted and became a street walker which led to her sickness.

At the end of Season 1, however, they reuniteand properly become husband and wife after years of separation. What made their reunion all the more romantic, although perhaps not to every fan’s liking, is that Lakan remembered her face perfectly but didn’t see what illness did to her appearance. While some fans find it hard to believe he wouldn’t notice her nose is missing, people with face blindness also struggle to notice changes.
Still, it’s more likely the decision to make him not notice her changed appearance was due to his love for her. During their reunion, she goes from sickly to suddenly perfect, and how she looks in the flashbacks when we see Lakan’s perspective. To her, she’s perfect and he proves it with how doting he is after their marriage.
