Now under the control of Sukuna, who hijacked Megumi’s body, Mahoraga has become an unstoppable force of destruction. Yet one can’t help but admire the almost poetic beauty of this ancient being unleashing its divine wrath. Thus, here is everything you need to know about the shikigami!
The Ten Shadows Technique
The Ten Shadows Technique is a powerful ability in the world of Jujutsu Kaisen that’s been passed down through the Zenin family since ancient times. This technique allows the user to summon ten different shikigami, or spirit creatures, using shadows as a medium. Each shikigami has unique abilities that aid the user in battle and serve them in other ways. To gain control over a shikigami, a sorcerer must first defeat it in an intense ritual exorcism, proving their power over the creature.
Once defeated, the shikigami is bound to the summoner and can be called upon by forming its shadow. Controlling the Ten Shadows requires great skill, strength, and perseverance. The most formidable shikigami in this technique is Mahoraga. Mahoraga possesses immense power but is incredibly difficult to control. Only the most talented Zenin masters can summon it in battle.

How To Summon Mahoraga
Summoning Mahoraga requires focus and skill. First, the sorcerer must clear their mind and concentrate. They use hand signs to shape their cursed energy and speak the magical words to call Mahoraga. As they finish the summoning incantation, Mahoraga starts to emerge. Its huge muscular body forms first, then its wings and tail take shape.

Finally, the spinning wheel floats above its head, meaning Mahoraga is ready. The summoner must maintain total authority over Mahoraga’s actions, directing its attacks while avoiding collateral damage. If the sorcerer loses control, Mahoraga could turn on them too. We see this happen in chapter 118.
Mahoraga’s Powers
In Buddhism, Mahoraga is one of the eight classes of deities who protect the Dharma (Buddhist teachings). These classes are collectively known as the Eight Legions. Mahoragas are often depicted as serpent deities, and their role is to serve and protect the Buddha. As such, this shikigami from Jujutsu Kaisen, like other elements of the series, draws inspiration from the Buddhist tradition. Mahoraga of JJK mostly derives power from its eight-handled wheel and the sword of destruction.
Eight Handled Wheel
In Jujutsu Kaisen, the wheel is a crucial element of Mahoraga’s design, functioning both as a metaphorical and physical aspect of the shikigami. The wheel in Buddhism symbolizes the cyclical nature of life, death, and rebirth – samsara – and the path toward enlightenment. In the context of Mahoraga, the wheel represents the shikigami’s capacity for metamorphosis, allowing it to adjust and evolve to counter its opponents' attacks. This dynamic adaptation is reflective of the Buddhist concept of impermanence (anicca), indicating that everything in existence, including the shikigami’s form and abilities, is subject to change.
Mahoraga, as a shikigami, is intrinsically linked to this wheel. It can counter even the most overpowering techniques, as we saw in the fight against Sukuna (chapters 118-119), by adapting and evolving in response to such threats. By doing so, Mahoraga comes closer to becoming an omnipotent being. This is why Sukuna is particularly interested in Megumi. If Mahoraga bows to his will, nothing in the sorcerer’s world is too impossible. Recently, he has used the wheel in chapter 217 to defeat Yorozu. Thus,Sukuna can possibly defeat Gojo. However, we will see the outcome of their battle after author Akutami wraps up the final arc.

The Sword of Extermination
The Sword of Extermination is the primary weapon used in battle by Mahoraga. At first glance, the sword appears to be a simple blade attached to Mahoraga’s right arm. However, its unassuming appearance belies its incredible power. Forged from positive energy, this large blade proves fatal to most enemies it battles against. Even mighty foes like the King of Curses initially struggled against the torrential blows from this sword.
However, the true strength of the Sword of Extermination lies not in its positive energy. When up against an unconventional foe like Sukuna, Mahoraga altered its tactics, channeling the sword instead with malevolent cursed energy. This flexibility and cunning adaptation is a hallmark of Mahoraga itself, andthe Sword of Extermination is an extension of the shikigami’s power. In the hands of the ancient Mahoraga, the Sword of Extermination is a dynamically powerful weapon able to overcome myriad foes.
