A similar thing happened in Sukuna and Mahoraga’s battle, where we saw the two beasts clashing and taking down the whole of Shibuya in the process. While other characters in the series would maintain their distance from the deadliest Shikigami of the Ten Shadow Technique, Sukuna couldn’t be more flattered, enjoying every second of the battle. And once again, Sukuna proved why he’s the strongest one around by not only evading his death at the hands of Mahoraga but defeating the untamed beast.
Jujutsu Kaisen: Why Did Sukuna Save Megumi

But that’s what makes us all scratch our heads. Mahoraga’s strength is renowned for defeating the Gojo family’s head, who wielded the ultimate abilities like Six Eyes and Limitless. Yet, he couldn’t beat Sukuna, but why, though? Sukuna isn’t just raw power; he’s got brains too. His strategy likely played a big role in this surprising outcome.
Mahoraga’s Powers Explained
Mahoraga boasts unmatched physical prowess that outmatches most characters within the series. His Sword of Extermination, a weapon infused with potent positive energy deadly to Curses, amplifies his formidable strength. The deadly combination of his immense physical might, coupled with the Sword of Extermination, poses a grave threat to anyone in his path. During the battle, even Sukuna commended the uniqueness of the blade, acting as a Reversed Cursed Technique, and also admitting that if he were a Cursed Spirit, he would have been killed with a single strike.
But, the biggest reason why Mahoraga is a treat even to Sukuna is its ability to adapt to any kind of Cursed Technique.Whether it be any normal Cursed Technique or the cream of the crop like Limitless or Dismantle and Cleave, Mahoraga can see through every technique once the wheel on its back takes the fourth turn. This means, that as soon as Mahoraga is summoned, a kind of timer is turned on, and you have to defeat the Shikigami before it adapts to your techniques. And once it adapts, the defeat of the opponent is certain.
But we have seen in the battle that Mahoraga managed to take the deadly slashes of Sukuna head-on and continued battling the King of Curses by continuously healing its wounds. However, towards the conclusion of the battle, Sukuna employed specific strategic moves that eventually led to Mahoraga’s defeat.
How Did Sukuna Defeat Mahoraga?
With Sukuna’s continuous attacks on the beast with his slash attacks, Mahoraga already adapted to his Dismantle technique. But, as we said earlier, Sukuna is a man with a plan, and he was saving his ultimate attack for the last. Sukuna opened his Domain, Malevolent Shrine, and adjusted it to turn the city into dust while also defeating Mahoraga and saving Megumi.
The relentless slashes of Dismantle and Cleave kept Mahoraga busy in adapting to Sukuna’s slash techniques while severely injuring the beast. However, that was not enough to take the Shikigami down. As his final attack, Sukuna revealed his fire abilities (the same technique used to kill Jogo), a technique completely ignorant to Mahoraga, and defeated it with a massive attack before it could adapt to this new ability.
