TheStar Warsfranchise is probably one of the most influential and talked about series since its inception by George Lucas back in 1976. With Jon Favreau currently serving as the showrunner ofThe Mandalorian,there are bound to be differences in opinions.
With the popularity of Pedro Pascal’sThe Mandalorian,several fans debated what exactly makes a person Mandalorian. To clear things up, Favreau had the perfect explanation for why Boba Fett (a popular bounty hunter) is not considered a Mandalorian even though he looks like a Mandalorian.
George Lucas Doesn’t Consider Boba Fett As a Mandalorian
Jengo Fatt was the most feared and the best bounty hunter in the galaxy during the final years of the Republic. He was also the chosen one who was cloned multiple times to create the clone army. During the cloning, Jango Fett had a request that one unaltered clone be given to him that he could raise as his son.
This son was Boba Fett. Technically, if Jango Fett was considered a Mandalorian, his unaltered clone should be considered a Mandalorian too. In an interview withEW, showrunnerJon FavreaualongsidePedro Pascaland director Dave Filoni cleared things up a bit.

“Our guy is a Mandalorian, and we definitely explore the culture of the Mandalorian. Boba Fett is a clone, according to Attack of the Clones,
He further continued,
“And by asking [creator George Lucas], he would say Boba Fett is not Mandalorian, not born on Mandalore,”
But that wasn’t the whole explanation of why George Lucas doesn’t consider Boba Fett as a Mandalorian. As the interview further continued, Favreau explained that it was because he was raised to be a Mandalorian and not a person born on Mandalore that led Lucas to his opinion.

The situation is similar to Uhtred fromThe Last Kingdom,Boba Fett was born as an unaltered clone but raised as a Mandalorian. As the interview continued, Favreau stated that this was the reason why George Lucas didn’t consider Fett a Mandalorian despite the character wearing iconic Mandalorian armor.

With such an interest in the Mandalorian lore, Lucasfilm announced in January 2024 that a film starring Grogu and the Mandalorian would be released. The film will continue from where the series ended and will cover the many adventures of Grogu and the Mandalorian.
The upcoming film, titledThe Mandalorian & Groguis expected to release on 28 July 2025 in the U.S.
