It is quite telling that a show that had the most number of Emmy nominations for a freshman series and lead actor Jason Sudeikis winning the Emmy for Best Actor for its first two seasons, did not win anything for its third.Ted Lasso, which became the breakout series from Apple TV+, went viral initially for its incredible messaging and character arcs.

However, the third season of the series fumbled, with many storylines being rushed and not giving the fans satisfaction. The most-anticipated journey of Nate Shelley as the coach of the opposing team West Ham United fizzled out by the end and fans were left in the dust. With a fourth season heading for a greenlight, Sudeikis has to make sure this problem is solved.

Fans deserve a better arc for Nate in Jason Sudeikis’Ted Lassoas it heads for season 4

The makers ofTed Lassohad been teasing that the third season would be the show’s last and the finale also felt like an ending. However,Deadlinerecently reported that three actors had their options picked up by Warner Bros. Television, with rumors of a season 4 greenlight being talked about. Star Jason Sudeikis isyet to confirm the news.

While fans are no doubt excited for another season with their favorite football team, it does not forgive the makers for a lackluster season 3. Several reviews criticized the drop in thequality of storytelling, especially with regard to Nate Shelly. Played by Nick Mohammed, Nate was the kit man at AFC Richmond and went on to become coach for West Ham United.

Nate’s heel turn in season 2 after a tiff with Jason Sudeikis’ Ted Lasso was one of the most anticipated arcs in season 3 but most of his moments seemed to be rushed. One of his most pivotal moments, his quitting West Ham, happened off-screen. Fans criticized the treatment of Nate in the show (viaReddit). Some fans had another reason to criticize his arc.

The problem with Nate is it never made sense for him to resent Ted to begin with. Ted elevated him, gave him his shot, allowed him to bask in the media spotlight, and yet there wasn’t really a moment where Ted did anything to signal a rift in their relationship. Nate just turns on him for no real apparent reason.

After his stint as the head coach of West Ham, he is shown to have quit and is welcomed with open arms by AFC Richmond, which seemed to be so off-character for all the characters on the team. Despite the show’s underlying theme of forgiveness and acceptance, the amount of time dedicated to it did not feel realistic.

Charming characters, heart-warming character arcs, and the binding factor of football were what made the first two seasons ofTed Lassoso endearing, and even won two Emmys for Outstanding Comedy Series. However, thethird season did not, and rightly so as many criticized it for its drop in quality and some arcs that did not get the right treatment.

However, lead actorJason Sudeikisdefended the show, saying that there was a proper arc for all the show’s protagonists and that if people could not appreciate it, he was not sure what they were watching. He said in the bookBelieve: The Untold Story Behind Ted Lasso, the Show That Kicked Its Way Into Our Hearts(viaTV Line),

I’ll never understand people who will go on talking about something so brazenly that they, in my opinion, clearly don’t understand. And God bless ’em for it; it’s not their fault. They don’t have imaginations and they’re not open to the experience of what it’s like to have one.

While Sudeikis is partially right, many fans still felt that the storylines were rushed, possibly because a prospect of season 4 was not on the cards yet. Now that the show is at a more optimistic stage, the writers may give the storylines a lot more meat.
