Into The Breach, the critically acclaimed Roguelike released a free update called Advanced Edition that gives the base game a massive overhaul. Subset Games released an update with the same title for their first game released,FTL: Faster Than Light, which introduced a plethora of new content, and this update treats Into the Breach no differently.

The Advanced Edition contains new Vek, weapons, missions, and squad, including the new fire-themed squad, Heat Sinkers. While this update brings a breath of fresh air to the turned-based game, the new squads, including Heat Sinkers, require some know-how. This guide will focus on how to play as the new Heat Sinkers squad to save humanity in a new timeline.

Dispersal Mech

Class:Prime

Best Pilots:Archimedes,Chen Rong

The Dispersal mech operates similarly to the Flame Behemoths', Flame Mech, except, surprisingly, does not shoot flames innately unless you’ve invested three Reactor Cores. Although a hefty price, it is something to work towards for the mid-game, as Reactor Cores are better spent elsewhere first.Focus on finding a second weapon ASAP.

This Mech relies on the Boosted effect to be worthwhile in the early stages of the game, sohaving a pilot like Archimedes or Chen Rong is pivotal. They are capable of moving after an action which can help your Mech get the Boosted Effect before the end of every turn.

Quick-Fire Mech

Class:Brute

The Quick-fire Mech can shoot two targets at one time, and with the Boosted effect can deal even more damage. You will need to rely on this Mech the most to kill off enemies in the early stages as its primary weapon can deal with multiple enemies at once.Pick up its Push upgrade to move Vek away from buildings at the very least.

Same rules apply to Quick-Fire as they did with Dispersal Mech, get a pilot who can move after an action. While Archimedes is superior, Chen Rong is still a solid pick. you’re able to also consider Morgan Lejune as they can keep the Boosted effect even without stepping on fire.

Napalm Mech

Class:Science

Best Pilots:Kazaaakpleth,Silica

The Napalm Mech is the backbone of this squad since it can actually disperse flames on the battlefield. Without fire-filled tiles, this squad suffers from a reliable source of firepower, so have Napalm spread fire as much as possible. Besides spreading fire, this Mech can push targets away which can be handy in several scenarios.

Giving it a pilot like Kazaaakpleth is a great idea since it provides an additional source of damage, but keep in mind that this Mech’s main job is to spread the fire. Employing Silica is also a good option as it can spread the fire even quicker, but be mindful of this Mech’s low HP, and don’t overdo it.

Heat Sinkers heavily rely on the spread of fire on the board to mop up the Boosted effect for Quick-Fire and Dispersal Mech. In the early stages, Give Reactor Cores to Quick-Fire to give its Rockets a push upgrade, then give other Cores to Napalm to spread its fire. Dispersal Mech suffers in the early stages due to its lack of damage, but once it can spread fire, it’ll be a different game.

Placement of your Mechs will be the most important aspect of this squad, as they need to be relatively close to each other to sponge up the fire. One way to engage the enemies is to wait them out.Setting your targets on fire and then simply pushing them out of threatening positions is the way you should play in the early stages until you get higher damaging weapons.Whenever you encounter Vek Leaders, always set them ablaze on the first turn. This will ensure that its HP will slowly ship away every turn for a total of four damage.

Be on the lookout for weapons that apply A.C.I.D. like Prime Spear, and A.C.I.D. Projector as this will only further increase your damage. While this is a fire-themed squad, you should shy away from other fire-flinging weapons, and diversify your arsenal. While Fire Beam and Vulcan Artillery are great, there are better weapons to consider.

Heat Sinkers Achievements

Boosted: Boost 8 Mechs in one mission.

This can be achieved by having Napalm Mech deliberately set fire to your other Mechs. Group your squad together at the start of the battle, and light them up before having them move to attack. Be sure to have the other Mechs perform actions to lose the Boosted effect so that it can be reapplied the next turn.

Feed The Flame: Light 3 Enemies on fire with a single attack.

Upgrade Napalm Mech’s firing range to maximum and look for enemies in a straight line. Dispersal Mech can help push Vek into the place if they’re a tile-off. Also, upgrading the Quick-Fire Mech’s Rocket to include push can help set up enemies too.

Maximum Firepower: Deal 8 damage with a single activation of the Quick-Fire Rockets.

Feed four Reactor Cores to the Quick-Fire Mech to increase its firepower to two damage and include push, then have the boosted effect on, either by Kai Miller or by walking on a tile on fire.Have your other Mechs stand behind the Vek being targeted by the Quick-Fire Mech, as this will cause bump damage to the enemies. This will take time to line up perfectly, but eventually, you will prevail.

The Heat Sinkers are a capable squad after having enough Reactor Cores, but once they do, they’ll be ready for the dreaded Unfair Mode, which is on par withDarkest Dungeon leveldifficulty. Advanced Mode is a free update and comes automatically with a download of Into The Breach. Thanks, Subset.
