There are often times when mangakas publish one work after another to stand out and Eiichiro Oda wants to be amongst them. After creating a universe as big as that ofOne Piece, taking things slow and stepping aside would change the pace that the mangaka is otherwise so used to.

For someone who thrives under pressure, the lack of stress that comes with working on a weekly serialized project would easily catch him off guard. To make sure nothing like this ever happens, there must be a way to turn things around. Seeing that the series is already approaching its final arc, that very moment might be sooner rather than later.
Another Long Series isn’t for Eiichiro Oda
During an interview with Manga Tengoku (viaOda Tengoku),Eiichiro Odaaddressed how things would be onceOne Piecewere to finally end. For a series with decades in the making, the story still has much left. Despite it being in its final saga, just how long it would take for the manga to end is still as big a mystery as that of the truth about the One Piece.
There are a lot of things I’d like to do. Not just limited to comics, I’d also like to make something like a movie. However, unlike before, rather than an epic tale I’m really feeling more inclined to drawing a short but tight story. After I finish One Piece I don’t think I’ll do another long-running serialized comic.

Once the series was to end, he might pick up on various other projects. Oda could find himself making a movie, going from one project to another. It would be an open field with a great explorer on an adventure. With how longOne Piecehas been running, one thing is clear, another long series is out of the question.

He admitted that going for another lengthy serialization would be just another problem he doesn’t want to deal with. Instead, there are other ways to fulfill the surge of imagination that does not require of a 1000 chapters and two decades worth of storytelling.
Not Just a One Hit Wonder
Although a big serialization isn’t in his mind, there are other ways through which Eiichiro Oda can express his creative genius. There are many mangakas who have worked on more than one successful series. The most iconic example would beAkira ToriyamawithDr. SlumpandDragon Ball,as well as Yoshihiro Togashi withYu Yu HakushoandHunter x Hunter.
After I complete it I think much like Akira Toriyama-sensei, I’ll put out a single volume story every once in a while. Right now I’m really yearning for that kind of style. And that’s exactly why right now, I’m going to put all of my energy into One Piece. If I keep thinking that this is my first and my last long-running manga, my motivation won’t run dry.

Oda also acknowledged how there were many mangakas who thrived on writing stories that ran the duration of only one volume or as many refer to them one-shots. Tatsuki Fujimoto has a list of highly praised one-shots that stand just as tall asChainsaw Man.Even Toriyama has his own fair share of loved stories that came after he made a name for himself.

TheOne Piecemangaka could follow in their footsteps and make a name for himself not just as the writer of one of the Big 3 but also as someone who let his imagination flow in more than just one place.
