Justin Baldoni is widely recognized for playing Rafael Solano inJane the Virgin. He’s also a filmmaker and social activist who has used his influence to bring important issues to attention. Lately, he has been in the headlines for his feud with Blake Lively, which has already led to legal filings.

But amid all this noise, a lesser-known lawsuit from his past has resurfaced. Baldoni, who has positioned himself as an advocate for inclusivity has been accused of racial discrimination by an ex-employee. So, let’s take a closer look at all the claims from this legal battle.
Justin Baldoni and his company reportedly breached an employee’s contract
Thelawsuitin question has been filed by a Black man, whomJustin Baldoniand entrepreneur Steve Sarowitz had hired as the Managing Editor for their Man Enough podcast (viaOh No They Didn’t). The plaintiff claims that he was offered a two-year contract with a company called WEL.
A key aspect of that contract was the potential of securing equity in the company, but the employee did not know that Baldoni and Sarowitz were already planning to shift the podcast to a different company. So, the contract was nullified and he had no job security either.

The plaintiff states that he encountered problematic racial comments from the beginning, with Sarowitz reportedly saying,“We need somebody here that looks like you.”This remark implied that he was being hired due to his appearance and race, not his merit.
Ex-employee alleges racial discrimination at Justin Baldoni’s company
After George Floyd’s murder in 2020, the company’s CFO purportedly made some other racial comments, which made the employee feel like he was stereotyped as an“angry Black man.”The tensions escalated when a white female colleague accused the plaintiff of labeling Singer as racist.
He tried to explain that it was a general post about racial bias, but she filed an HR complaint against him for bullying her. Baldoni did not address the issue but reportedly assured the employee that his job was safe, even when there was no contractual security. Amidst theBlake Lively lawsuit and controversy, this case was completely overshadowed.
