The protagonist of Akira Toriyama’sDragon Ball,Son Goku, has been deemed one of the best main characters in the history of anime and manga. His goofy personality and his desire to fight strong opponents are some of his best-known qualities, but the most important reason that makes him a great protagonist is his ability to thrive even in the worst scenarios.

Although it is a trait of the Saiyans to gain additional power whenever they are at their limits, Goku’s resolve is something entirely different. His persistent need to fight and win against any opponent he faces makes every power-up he has had justifiable. However, an interesting revelation proves that his success may not be the result of his hard work.

According to one of theDragon Ball Supermanga chapters, Goku’s resilient nature is the result of a sacrifice that his father, Bardock, made during his battle against Gas. This was revealed when Goku learned about Bardock’s battle against Gas, where Bardock managed to defeat the antagonist.

Bardock’s Tragic Sacrifice inDragon Ball Super

When Goku met Monaito, he gave Goku a scouter, which belonged to his father, Bardock. On the scouter, there was a recorded file of the battle between Bardock and Gas from years ago. The scene then shifts to the battle between the two forces as Bardock tries to stop Gas. However, evidently, he was not strong enough in the beginning.

No matter what he tried, he could not beat Gas, but that didn’t demotivate him. Instead, he got more resilient by saving Monaito and Granolah. However, Monaito is afraid that Bardock may lose his life because of them, which is why he asks Bardock to leave them and go back to his planet. But the Saiyan’s pride stopped him from doing so.

Seeing no other option, Monaito decided to use theDragon Ballto teleport Bardock to his home planet so that he could be saved. However, when the Dragon asks Bardock’s approval for teleportation, the Saiyan refuses and states that he would rather fight. Thus, he sacrifices his chance to go home to defeat the villain and asks for something instead.

Bardock’s Wish for Goku’s Success

When Bardock refused Monaito’s wish to end Bardock’s home, he was asked by Monaito about what else he could wish for on Bardock’s behalf. While Bardock doesn’t understand at first, being the kind father, he asks the dragon that he wishes that his sons end up thriving and achieving success in whatever they pursue.

Bardock’s love for his children may have been the reason why Goku is so successful in his life. He sacrificed his chance to go back to Planet Vegeta only to wish for growth and evolution for his children. Therefore, Goku’s victory against his opponents like Frieza, Majin Buu, and Jiren may not entirely be the result of his training orhis Saiyan abilities.

Goku’s father made an equal contribution to his child’s heroic adventures, and his strength and rare powers were partly gifted to him by Bardock. This proves thatDragon Ball Superis trying to focus more on the father-sonrelationship between Bardock and Goku, and this is truly a unique way to look at it.
