Game developer Renee Gittins is calling outEAafter her indie title, Potions: A Curious Tale (which iscurrently 15% off on Steam, by the way), was completely knocked off of Steam’s ‘new and trending’ tab due to EA “spam” releasing eleven games on the platform. Many of the games released by EA were older titles, such asCommand & Conquer, that were previously unavailable on the platform.
Taking toX(formerly Twitter), Gittins said, “My indie game I worked on for 10 years was immediately bumped off of New & Trending by EA spam releasing 11 titles at once. All of the built-up marketing and momentum squashed in an instant.” The indie dev then attached a picture showing Potions: A Curious Tale under all eleven of EA’s re-releases.

Along with the entire Command & Conquer franchise, EA also shadow-dropped many other classics onSteam. Dungeon Keeper, Sim City 3000, and The Saboteur are just some of the many games that suddenly appeared on the platform earlier this week.

EA suddenly releasing many of its most popular games on Steam continues the trend of publishers realizing PC players don’t want fifty different launchers installed on their computers. Late last year, Ubisoft broughtAssassin’s Creed Valhalla, Anno 1800, and Roller Champions to Steam. In a statement toThe Verge, the publisher said, “We’re constantly evaluating how to bring our games to different audiences wherever they are, while providing a consistent player ecosystem through Ubisoft Connect.”
EA’s Sudden Steam Releases Cause Trouble For Indie Dev
While there are sure to be plenty of happy Command & Conquer fans, EA’s sudden urge to bring many of their classic titles to Steam has left Potions: A Curious Tale developer Stumbling Cat in a tough position.
In response to a fan asking if there would be a Nintendo Switch version of Potions: A Curious Tale, Gittins replied by saying:

“I will be working on porting to consoles next. Or that was the plan… this wrecked all of my sales estimates. I might not be able to afford to now.”
Gittins received a ton of support from the gaming community, with many pointing out that re-releases shouldn’t be prioritized in the ‘new and trending’ tab on Steam. On the other hand, Gittin’s post has brought new eyes to A Curious Tale, with plenty of users saying they have now purchased a copy after seeing the dev’s post.

For those who want to support Gittins and get that Nintendo Switch port on the go, Potions: A Curious Tale can be purchased on Steam for 15% off until March 21, making it just $16.99.
Reviews of Potions: A Curious Tale praised the indie game for being “a captivating knowledge-based strategy fantasy adventure with a relaxing story, intuitive gameplay, and adorable art,” according to Michelle Jones ofGaming Cypher.GameLuster’sKate Jewett said they were “charmed” by A Curious Tale.
