Vince Gilligan, Bryan Cranston, and Aaron Paul left behind an incontrovertible legacy with the world ofBreaking Bad. Bob Odenkirk followed shortly after with the spin-off legal drama,Better Call Saul, plucking a seemingly unimportant pawn from the AMC parent series and turning it into arguably one of the best television shows in pop culture history.

It was only natural for the audience, the actors, and everyone involved with the making of the show to expect a grand bow out at the end of its final chapter. Contrary to that belief, however, Odenkirk refused to walk the same path as his predecessor. WhileBreaking Badwent out guns a-blazin’,Better Call Saulexplored a more demure and sensible ending befitting its anti-hero.
Bob Odenkirk’s Thoughts onBetter Call Saul’sEnding
The chaotic and smooth-talking lawyer who made the life of crime look just so damn good was put to rest after 13 long years.Bob Odenkirkwould never dress up as Saul Goodman again as he exchanged his suits and ties for prison overalls andBetter Call Sauleffectively called it a day after an impressive run.
However, such an anti-climactic ending was not something that Bob Odenkirk had expected when he took on the responsibility of Saul Goodman.Breaking Badhad rightfully gone out in a blaze of glory, so why couldn’tBetter Call Saulfollow in its predecessor’s footsteps in that regard? As it turns out, Bob Odenkirk much preferred it this way.

“I finally related to that attitude”: The Dark Side of Better Call Saul is Why Bob Odenkirk Understood Why James Gandolfini Wanted to Abandon Tony Soprano
Speaking toEmpireMagazine, the actor revealed:“I would have predicted an ending with more explosions. I’m so glad there weren’t.”
One of the struggles I had, and Rhea had this too, is that the characters were very emotionally intelligent about almost everybody they interacted with, and yet had these blind spots regarding their own behaviour. And in the end the writers granted these characters the self-knowledge that I felt they always had. I thought it was beautiful. When I read it, I was like, ‘Yes, exactly, that’s what should happen.’

When the time came for Saul Goodman to retire, he stunned his audience with a sacrifice that landed him behind bars by confessing it all on the courtroom floor. As one final trick up his sleeve, the good defender of justice receives a hero’s welcome in his new home at the Alcatraz of the Rockies.
Better Call SaulProves Bigger Isn’t Always Better
Not every protagonist of every film and television series has had the pleasure of being granted the perfect ending. In fact, some of the biggest shows in pop culture history have racked up a controversial reputation due to the nature of the finale. In some cases, these endings are so ill-timed and poorly written that a single episode cancels out the grand magnitude of the rest of the series (re:Game of Thrones).
Meanwhile,Breaking BadandBetter Call Saulembodied the philosophy that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Although individually, each event in these series may seem minute in the grand scheme of things, in hindsight, they stand out as tragic and beautiful turning points that made them both so timeless and sensational in the first place.

“That was something we never really nailed down”: Vince Gilligan’s One Better Call Saul Finale Regret Comes from a Breaking Bad Mistake He Wished to Undo
Better Call Saul‘s finale may not have opted for a grand exhibition of power like the burning of the Iron Throne and death of the Mad Queen, or an explosive one likeBreaking Bad. But in subtlety lies the real declaration of power.Better Call Saul‘s quietly tragic ending sent ripples and aftershocks through the audience, leaving them shaken to the core for decades to come.
