Dahmer-Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story’s Evan Peters went to great lengths to be as accurate as they could be to the psychology of Jeffery Dahmer. However, the show was also responsible for making sure that they did not paint the very real subject of the show in a sympathetic light, despite all that was revealed about Dahmer following his arrest.

In an interview with Netflix, Evan Peters talked about how delicate the process of adapting a personality like Dahmer was, especially given the widespread and personal effect that had had on the population at large. This merited a lot of research on Evan Peters’ part, which had the Kick-Ass alum pouring through every record he could find on the criminal.

Evan Peters had to go to a very dark place to be authentic about Dahmer’s character

Speaking withNetflix,Evan Petersrevealed the lengths he went to make sure that his portrayal of the criminal was authentic and complex, but without causing the audience to feel sympathy for him. He said:

Honestly, I was very scared about all of the things that he did, and diving into that and trying to commit to that was absolutely going to be one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do in my life, because I wanted it to be very authentic, but in order to do that, I was going to have to go to really dark places and stay there for an extended period of time.

Peters’ portrayal of Jeffrey Dahmer received widespread acclaim, given that the actor was able to capture the haunting personality of one of history’s most notorious criminals.

The actor was able to create a compelling character, the kind that was able to draw in audiences while simultaneously giving them a front seat to the atrocities that unfolded behind closed doors.

The show was keen to never show Jeffrey Dahmer’s perspective

Ryan Murphy, the co-creator of the show, had but one rule: the show was not the story of Jeffrey Dahmer. If anything, it was about the horrible consequences of the crimes committed by the serial killer, and how it affected the families of the victims.

One of the most important challenges that Evans highlighted was the pretense of a regular human being with a dark secret, which was something that the actor had to put himself to work to achieve. He said:

J.K. Rowling’s Biggest Harry Potter Plothole: First Female Death Eater’s Age Makes No Sense

To get lost in that, it was a challenge to try to have this person who seemingly was so normal, but underneath all of it, had this entire world that he was keeping secret from everybody.

So, we had one rule going into this from Ryan that it would never be told from Dahmer’s point of view. As an audience, you’re not really sympathizing with him, you’re not really getting into his plight, you’re sort of watching it from the outside.

Despite the show calling itself ‘The Jeffrey Dahmer Story‘ the point always was to communicate the plight and sorrow of the victims and their families, with the horror and shock value coming in the form of the dark secret that was harbored by a seemingly normal individual.
