Known for her powerful portrayal of Brienne of Tarth in the hit HBO dramaGame of Thrones, Gwendoline Christie experienced an intense moment on set while filming the season 4 finale. The episode titledThe Childrenhas since become known for featuring one of the show’s most brutal and iconic combat scenes between Brienne of Tarth and Sandor Clegane, aka The Hound.

And the actress has revealed that filming the fight sequence was terrifying and full of challenges, leading to on-set accidents, including being struck by the edge of Rory McCann’s chain mail armor, which left her in excruciating pain.

And her exceptional combat skills are best showcased in the Season 4 finale,The Children,when she unexpectedly encounters Sandor Clegane, also known as The Hound, along with Arya Stark, leading to a brutal and unforgettable fight.

The actress reflected on filming the intense fight sequence in an interview withGQ, revealing that despite months of training for the scene, she and her co-star, Rory McCann,accidentally injured each other.
“I think I clipped him. I got smacked in the face twice: once with the metal of his armor, the chain mail on the edge,”she shared. Christie described the pain as overwhelming, admitting that she fell to her knees in agony, thinking her nose was broken.

I fell to my knees and I screamed an expletive. I held my face because I thought my nose was broken. It was agony; it hurt so much. And there was that sort of ringing you get in your ears.
However, the Emmy nominee was determined, as she further recalled, “But I knew that we had to get this finished, so I stood up, and I did something I’d never done before.”

“I stood up, and I started spitting. Like an animal, just spitting. I was crying and spitting,”she continued. And theWednesdayactress decided to push through the pain and physical discomfort to finish the scene.

Gwendoline Christie also shared that both she and her co-star Rory McCann, unintentionally injured each other while filming their intense fight scene. She recalled being“punched in the face – twice”but also admitted that she“slipped and punched Rory”during the sequence.
However, the most painful blow came from McCann’s armor, which made the impact even worse. But Christie was not ready to give up and recalled crying and spitting on the ground like a wrestler preparing to re-enter a fight.

She told GQ,
There was snot everywhere. I just didn’t feel very in control of my own physicality and I was walking up and down, really crying, and then I said, “Let’s carry on.”
The actress admitted that she would not be able to continue if she gave in to the pain at the time, saying,“Because I knew in that moment if I got scared I wouldn’t be able to continue.”

Her resilience and perseverance in the face of real pain appeared to have added authenticity to the fight, which has since become one of the most unforgettable moments in the Emmy-winning drama series.
