HBO’sHouse of the Dragonis perhaps the biggest thing in fantasy right now. Premiering its second season worldwide on 16th June, theGame of Thronesprequel maintained its royal status, and presented the viewers with blood, gore, tragedy, and cutthroat politics that the fantasy epic is beloved for.

IfHouse of the Dragonis the crown of Warner Bros’ TV programming right now, Emma D’Arcy is its brightest jewel. With their breakout role as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen, the British actor has managed to sway much of the audience and critics’ favor. However, their non-binary identity and ideals have often been challenged by Hollywood.
Emma D’Arcy felt they had to present themselves as a woman in the initial phase of their career
Though it is true that Hollywood is much more diverse now than it used to be, gender stereotypes are still pretty common. People who identify as a different gender than the traditional ones are often mistreated or misidentified, sometimes on purpose.House of the DragonstarEmma D’Arcyis all too familiar with it, having faced them themselves.
In an earlier interview withE! News, D’Arcy confessed:
When I was starting out, I really felt that I had to present as a woman in order to find success in this industry. It wasn’t sustainable, and I stopped pretending. And weirdly at that point, I got nominated for Best Actress for the Golden Globes, which is like beautifully ironic. It implies the space for trans people and gender non-conforming people is getting bigger all the time.
Emma D’Arcy was nominated for the Best Actress Award at theGolden Globes 2023, the same yearHouse of the Dragonwon the Best Drama Show Award. But even that didn’t stop a reporter from misgendering them at an interview.

Matt Smith corrected a reporter who misgendered Emma D’Arcy
The cast ofHouse of the Dragonis known for being a close-knit bunch. You can often find them enjoying each other’s company and acting like a family behind the camera. Hence when reporter Sue Perkins accidentally misgendered D’Arcy at the Sky Premiere ofHouse of the DragonSeason 2, their co-starMatt Smithjumped in to correct her.
During the interview, Smith told Perkins (viaVariety):
I can’t take the credit, [but] I have to say, aren’t they brilliant? They are absolutely brilliant and you’re in for a real treat with Emma this year, I think Emma’s put in … a really great performance.
Smith’s reply was in response to Perkins telling him how she had interviewed D’Arcy before and how“she [D’Arcy] gave you all the credit”for a particular scene. Smith caught that in a second, and was quick to correct her without calling her out openly.

Though D’Arcy missed out on an Emmy and a Golden Globe forHouse of the DragonSeason 1, the show is back stronger than ever with D’Arcy giving their best performance.
House of the DragonSeason 2 is airing weekly onHBO Max.
