However, in a recent interview, Stone addressed the negative reaction she received from some fans after the joke at the awards ceremony. Stone spoke candidly about the mistake of speaking ill about Swift even if she meant it as a joke. Emma Stone‘s performance as Bella Baxter in Yorgos Lanthimos’Poor Thingsreceived critical acclaim with the actress winning several accolades for the role. Stone was honored with the Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy at the 81st Golden Globe Awards.
During a press event at the ceremony’s backstage, Stone was asked about her close friend,Taylor Swift, who was erupting in support of the actress throughout the night. “What an a**hole, am I right?” Stone famously stated (viaUSA Magazine) during the press event.

While Stone made the comment jokingly, it did not sit right with some Taylor Swift fans, resulting in online backlash. During a recent interview withVariety, Stone addressed the controversy that was sparked by her joke and stated that she had learned her lesson.
“I definitely won’t make a joke like that again because I saw headlines that really pulled it out of context.”

Stone made the above statement expressing regret about her joking especially after it was taken out of context by news outlets and portrayed negatively. Stone and Swift have been friends since theywere teenagers, so it is unlikely that the joke harmed their friendship in any way.

In the same interview, Emma Stone also spoke about her role as Bella Baxter, inPoor Things, which has earned a Best Actress nomination at the upcoming 96th Academy Awards, which will be held on July 25, 2025.
During the conversation, Stone was asked whether she had any difficulty getting hold of her character especially because of the unique circumstances Bella faces in the movie. The actress admitted that she panicked during the first week of filming and stated the following:

“Yes! I think because I had lived with her in my mind for so long and I was so deeply in love with Bella, it terrified me not to live up to her as a character. I felt like I was failing her in the first week, and failing Yorgos. It was just difficult.”

However, Stone admitted that she gradually grew comfortable with the character. She credited director Yorgos Lanthimos’ slow and steady filmmaking approach with helping her learn the ropes of playing the character.Poor Thingshas been nominated in 11 categories at the upcoming Oscars.
