It’s not unusual for actors with big stature to get typecast into physically dominating roles, and similar has been the case for Domenick Lombardozzi throughout his career. Since hitting it big in the early 2000s, following his stint in the highly acclaimedThe Wire, the actor has continued to star in projects that fed into his tough guy onscreen persona.

Interestingly, the actor has been able to turn this around, thanks to his performance inRay Donovan, and is doing the same thing withTaylor Sheridan‘sTulsa King.

Elaborating on it, he shared Sean ‘Mac’ McGrath was a“big springboard reset”for his image. Despite shaping him as the toughest guy in the room on paper, the show allowed him toaddresshis character’s emotional vulnerability.
I think the first role that [I] was able to show a completely different color was Ray Donovan, where I’m this 225-pound guy —maybe the physically strongest guy in the room, but emotionally the weakest. I think that was a big springboard reset for other people.

Tulsa Kingis also contributing to his turnaround onscreen. Even though the show hasn’t been successful in paintingthe New York Mobin the brightest light, which makes it hard for viewers to consider them a serious threat, the depth in Chicki’s character has certainly helped the actor.
Tulsa King, too, where it’s a multi-dimensional character. I hate using the term, but the heavy. I’m always the heavy and [I’m] kind of breaking away from that.

Fortunately, the conversations around Lombardozzi have continued to break away from his traditional tough guy onscreen persona, as the actor continues to prove that he can tackle more complex gigs.
Domenick Lombardozzi’s Bond WithReacherShowrunner Elevated His Character
Apart fromTulsa KingandRay Donovan, theReacherwriters also allowed the actor to bring his emotional chops to the table. While his character, Gaitano Russo, initially seems like another run-of-the-mill detective, it changes as the show progresses, and we’ve got the actor’s bond with showrunner Nick Santora to thank for it.
I’m also friends with Nick. We know each other’s families. We know when things are bad. We know when things are good. He knows me a lot better than a lot of other people, so he knows the vulnerabilities. When he wrote this guy, he’s tough, but he’s also holding on to something.

With his filmography leaning towards more emotionally evolved roles, it’ll be interesting to see what the future holds for the actor.
