Keanu Reeves and Jennifer Syme crossed paths in 1998 and quickly fell in love. Less than a year later, Syme got pregnant, and the duo eagerly awaited the arrival of their daughter, Ava Archer. But tragedy struck as the baby was a still born. Following the devastating loss, Syme’s grief was compounded by post-natal depression. This further led to the duo parting ways. However, they still remained close friends.

While Reeves was still dealing with the loss of his daughter, another heartbreaking event struck in 2001 when Syme died in a car crash. She crashed her car into three parked vehicles while driving home from a party at Marilyn Manson’s house. Further, Reeves, who had rekindled his relationship with Syme at the time of her death (viaParade), was left with an overwhelming sense of loss and grief.

Known for roles in action-packed movies such asJohn WickandConstantine,Reeves has gone through profound personal tragedies that have shaped how he views life now. In the year 1993, the actor lost his best friend River Phoenix to a drug overdose at the young age of 23.
While he was still dealing with this in 1999, he experienced the heartbreaking stillbirth of his daughter Ava. Further, Syme also passed away two years later in a car accident, compounding his grief. In aBBC interview, the actor added that it was these personal losses that changed his current outlook on life and added,“I’m 59, so I’m thinking about death all the time.”

He further added that this constant awareness of mortality isn’t negative but further heightened his appreciation for life’s fleeting moments. Reeves also said,“Hopefully it’s not crippling, but hopefully it’s sensitized [us] to an appreciation of the breath we have, and the relationships that we have the potential to have.”
