Jennifer Lawrence is a one-of-a-kind talent who has a refreshingly candid and bubbly personality. She’s cemented herself as a respected actress in Hollywood with multiple great projects. So, you’d expect someone like her to watch most of the renowned movies in the industry, but surprisingly, she has missed out on one Daniel Day-Lewis starrer.

Jennifer Lawrence in an interview

The Oscar-winning actress is known for her nuanced portrayal, especially for her role in theHunger Gamesfranchise andSilver Lining Playbook. Therefore, intentionally skipping out on another fellow Academy Award-winner’s work seems a bit strange, but she has an inexplicable reason to do the same.

Jennifer Lawrence on Daniel Day-Lewis’Phantom Thread

During an appearance on Marc Maron’sWTFpodcast,Jennifer Lawrencerevealed that she simply couldn’t watch the Paul Anderson directorial titledPhantom Thread. The movie is critically acclaimed and stars the legendary Daniel Day-Lewis, but that wasn’t convincing enough for the actress.

I got through about three minutes of it. I put in a good solid three. I’m sorry to anybody who loved that movie. I couldn’t give that kind of time. It was three minutes and I was just [oof].

Jennifer Lawrence in a still from Joy

Is it just about clothes? Is [Lewis’s character] kind of like a narcissistic sociopath and he’s an artist so every girl falls in love him because he makes her feel bad about herself and that’s the love story? I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know. I’ve been down that road, I know what’s what like, I don’t need to watch that movie.

Her statement reveals that she did not want to watch a potential portrayal of a toxic and manipulative relationship. Even if it was in the context of an artistic genius, Lawrence wanted to avoid indulging in the material altogether.

This Is a Big Problem in Hollywood- Kat Dennings Was Called “Fat and Not Pretty” After an Audition and So Was Oscar Winner Jennifer Lawrence

Did the Daniel Day-Lewis starrer have anything to do with Jennifer Lawrence’s ex?

Her strong unwillingness and her doubts led to the speculation that she was maybe referencingher past relationship with Darren Aronofsky. The director also helmed an emotionally intense film, titled,Mother, which had Lawrence in the leading role.

But she quickly dismissed these doubts, saying it had nothing to do with her ex, i.e., and maintained that she was still on good terms with him. So we still have no clarity about Lawrence’s aversion to the story of Reynolds Woodcock, a dressmaker in 1950’s London, played byDaniel Day-Lewis.

Her decision to not watchPhantom Threadmight seem unusual but it’s understandable if the actress finds it triggering. Lawrence simply coming to the conclusion that she did not want to subject herself to a particular emotional experience is reason enough.
