One of the major issues that fans complain aboutHouse of the Dragonis the significant changes, whether in the storyline or the characters. George R.R. Martin’s book,Fire & Blood, provided readers with complicated stories and complex figures that made reading worthwhile, yet it seems the TV show isn’t adapting to the same challenge.

From Season 1 of the prequel series, we’ve noticed a drastic change in the personalities of the main characters. Alicent Hightower was supposed to be ruthless and cunning. Rhaenyra Targaryen was supposed to be revengeful. Now, what happened?

Rhaenyra Targaryen and Alicent Hightower Must Embrace Their Villainous Sides

InHouse of the Dragon, Rhaenyra Targaryen has been programmed to be the protagonist who exhibits every possible characteristic that makes her worthy of becoming a queen. This is not the character thatGeorge R.R. Martindescribed in his novel. Yes, she was the Realm’s Delight when she was young, but the experiences she faced after the death of King Viserys were enough to signal her villain era.

Her half-brother Aegon II usurped her crown. Aemond caused the death of Lucerys. Alicent, her former best friend, would not acknowledge that she made a mistake aboutAegon the Conqueror’s dream. There were so many reasons why Rhaenyra had to be the big bad villain in Season 2.

The show’s writers made it to the point that she wouldn’t be the one ordering the assassination of Prince Jaehaerys because it would ruin her image. She alsodisguisedherself in a septa dress to attempt reconciliation with Alicent which is absolutely ridiculous. In every situation, she tries so hard to take the peaceful path.

In the season finale, Alicent met with Rhaenyra to ask for clemency, and even more shockingly, to give up Aegon. This was never written in the book, but again, these secret meetings would never be known in history. Still, this is a drastic change and a major step back from Alicent’s fierce demeanor.

Both of them have been watered down in the show and it’s starting to lose the excitement. Rhaenyra and Alicent could still revive the show by taking notes from HBO’sSuccessionand finally making a 180-degree turn.

House of the DragonShould Look intoSuccession’s Evil Female Characters

Successionwas one of HBO’s critically acclaimed shows and one of the things that made it successful was the fact that the writers did not hold back their characters from going all-out. One great example isShiv Roy, played bySarah Snook.

She was introduced as someone with no interest in joining the family company and a person with good morals which separates her from the others. Upon embracing her villain era, the show became even more interesting to watch.

Most fans reacted negatively towards the character, but this was her breaking stereotypes. Somehow, it’s difficult for others to see a female protagonist function under the same category as evil male characters. In the case of Rhaenyra and Alicent, the groundwork has already been laid. The show’s writers are only apprehensive about making their female leads despicable and evil.

House of the Dragonis currently available to watch on HBO.
