It’s beginning to look like Christmas, and Netflix is joining the party, so they kick-start the spirit with their latestHot Frosty. Writer Russell Hainline, known for her Hallmark Christmas movies, pens the story of a widow bringing a hot snowman to life. This charming and sweet holiday movie stars Lacey Chabert and Dustin Milligan.

Down on her luck after losing her husband, Cathy runs into Jane, a store clerk who shares a story about how she once found the man of her dreams by accident. So, Jane decides to give Cathy this scarf, which will help her find the man of her dreams. Upon laying it on a snowman, he comes to life and helps Cathy navigate healing and finding love again before he’s doomed to melt.

Often, we weave in and out ofChristmas moviesjust to get into the spirit. You know what you are getting from the film. We get the setup, the obstacles, and a resolution, all while feeling jolly. Hot Frosty isn’t different, with the unveiling of the snowman, understanding why he is here, and the lessons to learn from him.

That said, Russell Hainline’s balance of seriousness and comedy was good. Although Cathy is still settling in with the loss of her husband, it seemed a little distant in the past, making that aspect of her story not overly serious. This allows flexibility in the light-heartedness of her journey to be grounded and relatable. Of course, it opened the door to finding comedy in the pain, which most of us attempt to do.

Speaking of comedy relief, Craign Robinson and Joe Lo Truglio play our sheriffs in town. Truglio plays the good cop, while Robinson plays the bad cop. Robinson is comedic gold and a delight whenever he is on our screens. It’s a very playful bad cop allowing Robinson to have a bunch of fun within the role.

All of this doesn’t work without chemistry between our Hot Frosty and his love interest, Cathy.Lacey Chaberthas become a Hallmark movie staple over the last few years, so it’s not much of a surprise that director Jerry Ciccoritti and the casting team chose her to lead this film. Chabert plays the role perfectly, offering a balance of sweetness and charm. Hot Frosty himself, Dustin Milligan, is the perfect pillar for the role. Milligan and Chabert’s Milligan and Chabert’s electric chemistry makes the couple easy to root for.

Hot Frostyisn’t without its flaws. It is very predictable, and you can see what happens a mile away. With a unique premise of a snowman coming to life, I had hoped they would attempt to take a risk or two with the story. Unfortunately, they played it safe, which isn’t a bad thing, as the general audience may not care. Another issue was the run time. Although the film is only an hour and a half long, the middle of the film drags. These are minor issues that are easily ignorable if you are just pressing play.
