Good news for those who plan to play Nintendo Switch 2 in handheld mode.

I had a feeling that buying one online would only lead to disappointment, so instead I did it the old-fashioned way: I camped out in front of my local store and waited in person. I was able to secure one, but had I not arrived several hours before the store opened, that wouldn’t have been the case. However, Nintendo didn’t expect all of this demand, and they’ve finally told us why.

Nintendo Thought The Switch 2 Would Be Too Expensive

During a recent investor Q&A, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa was asked about the company’s conservative forecast of only selling 15 million Nintendo Switch 2 consoles during its launch window.

While that number seems like a lot, many industry analysts expected it to sell far more than that, which very well could.

However, Furukawa said that the system’s price led Nintendo to deliver a lower-than-anticipated sales forecast, according to a report byVGC.

“Nintendo Switch 2 is priced relatively high compared to Nintendo Switch, so we recognize that there are corresponding challenges to early adoption,” he said.

“Even if there is momentum around the launch, we know it will not be easy to keep that momentum going over the long term through the holiday season and beyond.”

Nintendo’s left behind so many engaging experiences over the years, so let’s show them some love.

Furukawa’s comments about keeping momentum ring a little more true today, given the possible impact tariffs have on the sale of video games. We have already seenMicrosoft raise its pricesin response to global trade uncertainty.

“Our financial projections were created based on the assumption of U.S. tariffs of 10% on products produced in Japan, Vietnam, and Cambodia, and 145% on China,” Furukawa clarified. Ironically, since those comments, U.S. tariffs on China are now reportedly down to 30%, but that can always change at the drop of a hat.
