It seems like many fans felt equally devastated and disappointed with the season finale of the neo-Western drama seriesYellowstone. Created by Taylor Sheridan, the show followed the life and politics of the Dutton family, a thrilling spectacle that entertained fans for five epic seasons.

With all the surprising events that took place in the finale episode, the brutal fight between Beth and Jamie Dutton seemed to linger with fans. Some aren’t satisfied with the latter’s fate, even wishing he should have been given his own redemption arc.

As the family holds a private funeral forKevin Costner’s John Dutton, his daughter Beth (played byKelly Reilly) whispers an oath that she will avenge him. A few moments later, she speeds to Jamie’s (played byWes Bentley) house and surprisingly attacks him. As expected, the scene was brutal and bloody.

As their fight ensues, Beth’s husband Rip (played byCole Hauser) arrives and helps her finish the dirty job. Finally, Beth drives the knife into her brother’s chest.
While many fans felt satisfaction with how the show ended, some are bothered that Jamie did not get his much-deserved redemption arc. On social media, several netizens pointed outTaylor Sheridan’s predictable writing, with many criticizing it for being sloppy and anticlimactic, thus leaving a weak ending to a terrific show.

Dear#TaylorSheridan,Jamie was never the super villain you wanted us to believe he was. That was cheap. That was lazy. That was predictable.Wes Bentley and the character deserved better. You had 5 seasons to do something better, and you didn’t.#YellowstoneTV#yellowstone
Taylor Sheridan doesn’t understand Jaime Dutton. He wants to villainize Jaime but also writes him such a way that makes him spineless when dealing with John & Beth. This actually makes many fans feel sympathetic towards Jaime. Jaime’s overall character arc doesn’t make any sense.https://t.co/Yrb3Y8RABe

As one fan pointed out, Sheridan made it look like “her and her serial killer husband are the hero couple to root for,” referring to Beth and Rip. Another netizen argued that Jamie was never the villain that the showrunner wanted people to hate.
In fact, the audience had been wishing for Jamie’s redemption arc for years. He started off as a promising character in the first season, but his development was thrown off the rails in the succeeding installments.

Wes Bentley already expected Jamie Dutton’s death
Even actor Wes Bentley felt his role was just an outsider from the beginning. He toldTV Linethat he believed Jamie would be gone by Season 2 because “it just felt like that kind of a character.”

It’s sad that Jamie’s storyline had been reduced to a son constantly seeking his father’s approval. “That’s been the journey the entire time,” Bentley told the outlet. In fact, how he felt about his character in the earlier seasons remained the same until the dreaded part of the script.
