In a newannouncement poston Steam, developer Arrowhead and publisher Sony have announced thatHelldivers 2will soon force you to link yourPlayStationNetwork account on PC if you want to fight for democracy.

When Helldivers 2 was released for Steam and PlayStation 5 back in February, Arrowhead reportedly encountered “technical issues” which led the studio to allow a grace period when it came to players linking their Steam and PlayStation Network accounts. 3 months later, and that optional grace period is officially coming to an end.

Helldivers 2 Players Want This Fan Made Assault Mission To Become A Reality

Arrowhead’s CEO says the concept is “crazy similar” to an idea that has already been prototyped.

“Account linking plays a critical role in protecting our players and upholding the values of safety and security provided on PlayStation and PlayStation Studios games,” publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment explained. “This is our main way to protect players from griefing and abuse by enabling the banning of players that engage in that type of behaviour. It also allows those players that have been banned the right to appeal.”

After explaining why Sony is forcing you to link your Steam and PlayStation accounts to play Helldivers 2, the post then stated that all new players will be required to link the two accounts from May 6th. But for existing PC players, the mandatory login will appear from May 30th and will be required to have linked their Steam and PlayStation accounts from June 4th.

If you don’t have a PlayStation Network account already set up, the process is pretty simple and completely free. So while it might be mildly frustrating having to setup a PSN account, it’s not really the end of the world. If you want to create an account so you’re ready to fight for Democracy, head on over to theofficial PlayStation website.

Players have, however, responded to the news as you’d expect them to. “Why the fuck is this game trying to force me to make one after months of playing without one? If the game works without psn accounts now, why won’t it work without sony accounts then?,“one user saidin response to a post on Reddit.

“This is a stupid decision. Regardless of whether or not you are willing to do it, there are some people who won’t. This will lose the game players. This should have been done as a requirement at launch, or not at all. Changing this after people have been playing this whole time without it feels like a slap on the face,“another user said.

Some players even appear to be completely abandoning the game after the recent news, withone Reddit usersaying, “I don’t have a PlayStation and I’m not making an account. you post your game on steam, I expect to use a steam account?” Whileanother said, “I’m a Steam player. If I have to do this, then I quit. Full stop.”

If players are true to their word, Helldivers 2 could see a stark drop off in players from June 4th.
