When del Toro visited the Gundam Front Tokyo in Diver City, he was in awe moment seeing all the figurines displayed there. He even wanted to have them all. By seeing his enthusiasm the interviewer remarked, “He really was inspired by Japan. And how would he react when he see this (the giant figure of mobile suit).”

The Russian Jaeger quickly became a fan favorite among the viewers. Its unparalleled strength and endurance bore a resemblance to the Zakus from Gundam. The parallels between the two designs are evident in their sturdy outlines and powerful arsenals.

Zeon Mobile Suit That Inspired Guillermo del Toro
The Zaku models, particularly Zaku I and Zaku II, played a crucial role in shaping the Cherno Alpha from thePacific Rim. The model MS-05 Zaku I was the first designed mobile suit for combat purposes. Later the new model MS-06 Zaku II became more popular than its predecessor. This new model was the primary mass-produced mobile suit for the Zeon army.
The Zaku II was known for its all-round combat scenarios much like the Jaeger Cherno Alpha. It has a distinctive mono-eye sensor, a shoulder shield, and a close-combat axe weapon. These have influenced in modeling of del Toro’s close combat Jaeger.
