Bleachhas some complex characters, from Uryu Ishida to Byakuya Kuchiki. There’s no end to morally grey characters, even those who have committed some truly despicable acts that were never met with any consequences in the storyline. This, of course, refers to Mayuri Kurotsuchi, the captain of the 12th Division in the Gotei 13 and the 2nd president of the Shinigami Research Institute. He’s the token mad scientist ofBleachand he doesn’t hold back on the abuse of his colleagues but more jarringly, mistreats his daughter.

It’s hard to believe that the same man who blew up his own colleagues, however, did grow some affection for Nemu. ThroughoutBleach,he treated her as nothing more than just an experiment, handling her roughly without care to sentience. As time grew, so did his twisted way of affection for her and thinking of her as an individual in subtle manners.

Nemu’s death in the latest episode ofBleach: Thousand-Year Blood Warexposes this side of him, which comes as a shock to fans. It proves that Mayuri might actually be as morally grey as Tite Kubo portrays him to be.

Mayuri Kurotsuchi’s unexpected reaction to Nemu’s demise speaks volumes

Nemu was never meant to be the actual daughter of Mayuri Kurotsuchi but merely a scientific marvel to him. Her name, Nemuri Nanago or Nemuri Number 7, suggests he’s done some trial and error with other versions of her.

Despite him calling her his daughter, he’s never once failed to remind her of her place. For years, Mayuri treated her not as a sentient being but as a tool, subjecting her to dangerous modifications and blatant physical abuse. It’s a wonder a man like himnever faced any consequences inBleach.

However, their dynamic becomes the focus of theQuincy Blood War. Inthe battle against Pernida, the Left Hand of the Soul King, Nemu sacrifices herself for Mayuri. Her demise is brutal as her body disintegrates into pieces and nobody expected such a moment to happen inBleach.

Mayuri demands why she would act beyond his orders and she has no clue other than that she felt the need to protect him. At this, he simply drops her to the ground, when in the past, he would’ve possibly done worse. This subtle growth shows howTite Kubohas carefully built their relationship, however twisted it may be.

Where did Mayuri’s sudden affection stem from?

There’s a purpose behind Mayuri’s blatant abuse and disregard for her, however disgusting it may be. It’s his obsession with perfection that causes this tyranny, something typical of a mad scientist archetype. As time went on, however, he began transitioning from calling her Nemuri Number 7 to simply Nemu. This showed he had a glimmer of hope she would survive and be the successful subject.

She’s his prodigy in a weird sense. Mayuri’s treatment of her can be interpreted as his wish for her to learn and grow; to surpass his expectations beyond what he was capable of. What he never computed is that Nemu would achieve this in a final act that he wouldn’t have even anticipated.

His shock is the evidence of his convoluted love for his creation. While she might not have surpassed his expectations the way he wanted her to, she did allow him to grow emotionally.
