Though he has truly left his audiences baffled by unbelievably remarkable storylines in his famous space opera, George Lucas has also incorporated quite a few controversial elements into hisStar Warssaga. For one, in the original movie trilogy, he forbade the late actress Carrie Fisher from wearing underwear as “there are no underwear in space.” But that’s not all.

While that was one instance, he ostensibly pulled a similar move during the making of the prequel trilogy that followed, starring Natalie Portman as Padmé Amidala. This happened when he, yet again, ended up oversexualizing the female character’s appearance – a move that, now, after decades of the trilogy’s release, is garnering quite the sarcastic criticism from fans.

The Time George Lucas Oversexualized Natalie Portman inStar Wars

TheStar Warssaga has earned tremendous love from fans worldwide for its outstanding depiction of the two major Forces, but it has also earned creatorGeorge Lucasquite a bit of criticism for some of his choices. Like the way he went around oversexualizing his female characters, including Princess Leia in the original trilogy and Padmé Amidala in the prequel trilogy that followed.

To jog your memory a bit, the Padmé Amidala part happened in the second installment of the prequel trilogy,Episode II – Attack of the Clonesfrom 2002. In the movie, there’s the scene whereNatalie Portman‘s then-Senator of Naboo gets handy with a blaster as she steps into the arena brawl on Geonosis, but she seemingly takes more damage to her clothes than her body.

As Padmé, clad in a tight white outfit to rescue Obi-Wan Kenobi on Geonosis, handles her weapons during the crisis situation, a vicious cat-like monster creeps up on her to scratch her to loosen up her top. This results in her outfit turning into a crop top – an oversexualized scene that many fans now claim must have been designed by Lucas specifically to amuse teenage boys.

Inevitably, this scene makes the situation stand as clear as it could get. But that’s not all. Previously, in the originalStar Warstrilogy, there was also quite a bit of frenzy over the wardrobe designed for the lateCarrie Fisher‘s Princess Leia. And further adding fuel to this already ignited fire was none other than the mastermind behind this space opera.

In her memoirWishful Drinking, the late actress shared the same as she recalled her complicated relationship with Lucas’ space fantasy – one that both made her a household name and, as she jokingly wrote, “ruined” her life as well. PerVanity Fair, she wrote:

George comes up to me the first day of filming and he takes one look at the dress and says, “You can’t wear a bra under that dress.”So, I say, “Okay, I’ll bite. Why?”And he says, “Because. . . there’s no underwear in space.”

So there’s no underwear in space, but there is, however, a gold bikini that shows a lot more than it hides? Hmm, interesting. That said, it’s inevitable that even fans are questioning Lucas’ choices about oversexualizing female characters in his saga now as well.

Fans Have Sarcastic Criticism to Deal With George Lucas’ Antics

Ever since fans came to realize this chronology of this over-sexualization of female characters by Lucas in hisStar Warslore, they can’t help but have some incredibly sarcastic criticism for the mastermind. While some of them react hilariously to this, others point out how all of this proves that Lucas really tamed his saga for the amusement of teenage boys back then.

All in all, taking toX, here’s what those fans have to say:

My favorite bit was the extremely subtle and conservative outfit Padme is wearing by the fireplace when she’s insisting she and Anakin can’t be together.pic.twitter.com/rRUbU3Up1g

George knew what’s up.pic.twitter.com/iZTB8zwMuJ

A real mystery how this movie spanned a billion shows, toys, games, etcA real movie aimed at teenage boys

At least she got to wear a bra

😂 George 😂

Absolute skinema

This is an example of “clothing damage” where characters, typically women, are violently stripped from their clothes to make them look more revealing. It’s actually pretty grotesque.

These fan reactions are more than enough to emphasize that as fans re-examine theStar Warssaga, they can’t help butcall out George Lucas for his questionable treatmentof female characters. From Padmé Amidala’s damaged outfit to Princess Leia’s infamous gold bikini, it’s clear that Lucas’s vision for the franchise often prioritized male gaze over female agency.

While the soap opera saga remains a beloved and iconic part of pop culture, it’s essential to acknowledge and critique its problematic elements.
