The author recently took to his blog,Not A Blogto talk about why he could not write much this year. Apart from working on TV projects likeHouse of the Dragonand the upcomingA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Martin attributed personal reasons for his failure,

Writing came hard, and though I did produce some new pages on both The Winds of Winter (yes) and Blood & Fire (the sequel to Fire & Blood, the second part of my Targaryen history), I would have liked to turn out a lot more. My various television projects ate up most of those months. Some of that was pleasant (Dark Winds and The Hedge Knight), but most of it was not.
Martin also mentioned that the death of his friend and sci-fi writer Howard Waldrop affected his work.

We know this George, that’s why we complain. You are choosing to focus your time on other things besides the original concept which is the books. At this point they won’t be done, I’ve accepted it. It’s a sad fact.
There’s something slower than never?

Just say your not gonna ever finish the book
Dawg you had 20 years
While the author has promised that he would be working on the novels soon, fans seem to be disappointed with his turnaround time and might just give up on the franchise soon.
