Microsoft’s CEO Phil Spencer has always been big on expanding the reach of Xbox beyond consoles. He believes that although the console market is not going anywhere, it is not the only thing in focus for the company, regardless of it being central to its strategy.
Xbox exists beyond a box under players’ televisions. It is everywhere right now and through its subscription-based Game Pass, it has allowed many more players to join, including players who do not wish to own a console.
The Xbox console is not the be-all and end-all for Microsoft
The Xbox console is the direct competitor of PlayStation and Nintendo; however, Microsoft has managed to find a way where it does not get much affected by the console war; only its focus is more in favor of player choice as opposed to complete dominance of Xbox on the console market.
Phil Spencer has stressed this fact time and again: his focus is not on dragging people from PlayStation to Xbox but on creating an environment that enriches the entire gaming community, including both creators as well as players.

He believes that focusing on giving players the freedom to choose the way they want to approach gaming is also a key factor determining the company’s success in the long run. Stressing the same in an interview withThe Guardian, he said:
We know that for players, especially Xbox players, where we come from is people sitting in front of their television with a console plugged in,” says Spencer. “It’s what developers are targeting.
It’s what so many of us play. Like, ‘Box’ is in the name of our product, right? That console is critical to what we’re building. But it’s not the only thing we’re going to focus on. We’re going to focus on allowing player choice.
Xbox is an important product for Microsoft, but that does not mean that the console’s growth is the only thing on the CEO’s mind at the moment. He wants to bring about a change in the way people approach gaming in general.
