With layers ofoverlapping systemsand a plethora of player choices coming together, Engage continues the fantastic combat mechanics of the Fire Emblem franchise. Whether you’re playing Casual or Classic, on Normal, Hard, or Maddening, these tips & tricks can help you succeed in battle.
10Scout The Enemy
The first thing you should do when entering a new fight is survey the battlefield. Scouting the environment and your opponent can give you a powerful edge in combat. When looking around, identify the number of enemies as well as their position, level, class, and weapon.
This information can help you make the proper response when formulating your battle plan. Your unit choices and battle priorities should be a reflection of the enemy’s position and composition. Prioritize eliminating the high-damage enemies with low health first, like Archers and Mages, to minimize your damage taken.

9Select The Right Heroes For The Job
Once you’ve seen your opponent’s unit deployment, select the heroes from your team that are best equipped to deal with the threat. You want a mix of frontline and backline units that are of a similar level or health point pool to the enemy.
Since the number of units you can field is limited, it’s essential to choose aformidable team composition. If you’re fighting a training battle, like a Paralogue or Skirmish, consider fielding the units that need the extra experience boost before the next story chapter.

8Respect The Weapon Triangle
The best team composition you can command is one that counters the enemy team’s weapon classes. When looking at the menu, glance at the bottom right corner of the screen to review the weapon break system. Swords, Axes, and Lances represent the weapon triangle that mimics a Rock, Paper, Scissors mechanic.
Weapon breaks prevent enemies from counter-attacking for the remainder of that turn. When attacking a Sword wielder, consider leading off with a Lance attack. Then feel free to attack with any unit, as the enemy will be unable to retaliate until their next turn.

7Equip Your Units For Battle
After selecting your team, before embarking on the battle, ensure that your team is fully equipped. While you may Optimize All equipment for your selected team, manually double-check everyone for the weapons and inventory items that they need.

Don’t forget to select Manage Skills and ensure that your units have their most recently acquired Skills equipped. Also, if you have any newly obtained Emblem Rings from story missions or crafting Bond Rings in the Ring Chamber, equip the highest caliber of rings on all of your heroes.
6Position Your Team
Once you’ve located your nearest opponents, position your team to counter their formation. If there is an Axe Fighter nearby, swap the spaces of your units to position a Sword wielder in the front. By quickly eliminating the closely positioned enemies, you can then build a forward stronghold and fortify your position.
While you will generally want your high-health pool units at the front and your weaker units in the rear, keep Movement stats in consideration when Swapping Spaces. Units mounted on horses, and pegasi can easily start in the rear as they can overtake other units when traveling a long distance.

5Complete Side-Objectives
At the start of a battle, look for additional objectives that can provide bonus rewards. These objectives include looting chests, eliminating enemies holding treasure, and alerting civilians to the ongoing battle. By completing these tasks, you’re able to gain extra advantages in the war to come.
When presented with a side objective, ensure you are also aware of what the victory conditions are for the overall battle. If the victory condition is to eliminate a certain enemy on the battlefield, doing so will end the fight. If you want to do any side objectives, you need to complete them beforesecuring a Victory.

4Use The Draconic Time Crystal
The most powerful tool at your disposal in Fire Emblem Engage is the Draconic Time Crystal. This item is available through the Menu at any time during the Player Phase. By activating the Time Crystal, you can turn back the clock and rewind all actions on the battlefield.
This time-turner affects both Player and Emeny’s actions and can rewind events that didn’t play out in your favor. If you see the battle starting to turn against you, bring up the Time Crystal and see how you can change the tides of war.
3Play Around Map Mechanics
While you’re traversing the battlefield, always keep an eye out for map mechanics. Tiles that provide unique properties, destructible obstacles, and impassable terrain are just a few of the variables you will come across. Ensure that you are taking advantage of these mechanics rather than having them hinder your efforts.

If an enemy is sitting on a Protection Tile, try not to engage them on this spot. Attacking from range or luring the enemy off of their location can be powerful tactics to overcome this disadvantage. Also, locate your desired pathway through a map and use fliers or cavalry to pave the way.
2Let The Enemy Come To You
It’s almost never the best strategy to charge directly into your enemy. Setting up a strong formation and letting your enemies attack you can be far more advantageous. Move forward cautiously, utilize choke points, and have your high-health units in the front.
Sometimes ending your turn early is the correct play. You don’t need to move all of your units as far as they can travel each turn. It can be wise to identify where you will engage the enemy and ensure that your units have the advantage in formation and location.
1Fight Alongside Your Allies
The best way to get an advantage on the battlefield is to fight alongside your allies. Your units have a variety of Skills that give different boosts in battle. For example, Alear can equip the skill Divinely Inspiring.
This skill provides adjacent allies +3 damage and gives them a defensive edge by making them take 1 less damage on attack. Your heroes can also provide advantages through their unit class. Backup Units will make Chain Attacks when you engage an enemy that they are standing next to. Inspect your unit’s Skills and Classes and make use of these powerful assets.
