For instance, Steve Carell, who played Michael Scott in the show, and his costar Phyllis Smith, who portrayed Phyllis Lapin-Vance, could not finish a scene because they kept laughing over one word.

Phyllis Smithrecalled, in an interview withOffice Ladies, a painfully hysterical memory while shooting the wedding scene inThe OfficeSeason 3.
The one scene I had a really hard time not laughing through was when [Carell] came into the bride’s room to give me advice, and we could not get through the word ‘pungent’.
Her costar,Steve Carell, would utter the word and then burst into laughter, which was so infectious for Smith that she could not help but chuckle as well. “Every time he would say ‘pungent,’ he would break out in his cackle. He couldn’t get through it, and I couldn’t get through it,” she explained.

The scene took more time to film than intended because the duo could not control themselves. Not only Carell and Smith, but the people around the area were also dying of laughter. “And then we hear the sound of people sitting outside the door laughing, so they had to move them down the stairway, down into the bottom because every time we said ‘pungent,’ we lost it,” Smith added.
The actress remarked that she was only able to get through the scene when she held her breath “so if I looked a little blue in that scene, that’s the reason.”
