A savvyElden RingYoutuber by the name of Ziostorm recently made an interesting discovery and shared it onTwitter, which is that the highly anticipated DLC expansion for Elden Ring, Shadow of the Erdtree, has seemingly been in development for about a year, meaning that work on the DLC started not long after the game launched.
The LinkedIn profile of one Kenneth (Kin Yue) Chan, a director and producer over at Japanese studio FromSoftware, states that he’s been working on Shadow of the Erdtree since April 2022. That would mean that FromSoftware has been developing this DLC expansion for about a year, likely even a bit more.

This makes one thing clear. Unlike is the case for many AAA titles in this modern age, FromSoftware didn’t immediately plan to make DLC for Elden Ring but probably only decided to do so following the game’s massive success. And though not written in stone, this also seems to suggest that the expansion is going to be massive.
DLC development time is exponentially shorter than making a game from scratch, as all the foundation for gameplay, mechanics, systems, and UI has already been built, so all that’s left to make is the content in the DLC. So, the fact that they’ve been working on it for a year suggests that Shadow of the Erdtree will add in a lot of new stuff for players to enjoy.
Furthermore, the DLC doesn’t have a release date yet, not even a release window. It could still be a ways away. A priorreportclaimed that Shadow of the Erdtree would release after FromSoftware’s upcoming game,Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon, but take that with a grain of salt, as it hasn’t been confirmed.
If that is the case though, and Armored Core 6 launches in August (as is claimed byInsider Gaming), then it will still be a while for Shadow of the Erdtree to release, which only lends credence to the possibility of it being a notably sizable expansion.
That being said, FromSoftware is likely split between multiple different projects, not just Shadow of the Erdtree and Armored Core 6, so it could definitely be that a divided focus is what’s been making this DLC expansion take so long.
