Malenia is commonly accepted as the most challenging boss inElden Ring, but the community keeps finding ways to embarrass The Blade of Miquella. While she was justrecently bested by a Bop-It, an Elden Ring player has now bested her using a shield.
In a new post on the Elden Ring subreddit, Reddit useru/Atsuki_Kimidoriproves it is actually not impossible to defeat Malenia using a shield, contrary to popular belief. In the video, we see the player taking down Malenia using the Golden Greatshield by simply using the good ol' poke attack. While it is not straightforward to pull off this feat, considering Malenia is one of the most agile bosses in the game, it still makes the battle significantly easier.
They add that any greatshield would probably do the job. However, there is a catch. You need to ensure that your shield is highly enhanced, as it adds block reduction which is quite crucial to endure Malenia’s hits. While it is not necessary to upgrade it all the way, it should still be only a few ranks away from the maximum.

A major reason why defeating Malenia with just the shield and poke attack is such a big deal is because of Malenia’s innate ability to heal after every strike. Irrespective of whether her hit manages to inflict damage on the player or not, Malenia gets a health boost for every hit. This pretty much makes a defence-heavy builds obsolete against Malenia, as players might notice her getting back to full health in just a few blocks. Many players do take the defensive approach for taking down difficult bosses, but for Malenia, an offensive approach has always been best.
While players must have used a shield to block Malenia’s Waterfowl Dance, which is hands down the hardest move to dodge in the game, the player has gone a step forward and managed to complete the entire battle. This sets yet another precedence for defeating Malenia, shortly after aplayer completely obliterated her with Morgott’s Cursed Sword.
