And that’s the beauty of a FromSoftware game: fans would have to knit their own story. They would have to dig through the remains to find clues, and then piece those clues together as a theory. The latest character who quickly became a part of such an investigation is none other than Messmer fromShadow of the Erdtree. And a new theory about him is making a lot of sense.
A newElden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtreetheory tries to unravel Messmer’s past
Years before the tarnished controlled by the players started their journey in the Lands Between ofElden Ring, a god died. This god’s death set in motion a chain of events that has yet to see its final link. This chain has been going on and on.
Malenia, Mohg, and Messmer Are Going to Be Real Trouble for One Elden Ring Player After This Goof
Players are told that before this unfortunate one, gods never died; they never tasted the sour taste of what some call destined death. A destined death is what befalls every living being; if said in clear terms, it is destined to happen.
And gods never knew destined death; they were immortals; they could get hurt. They could become subjects to a harrowing disease like Malenia, and they could even be mad and roam the world like Radahn, but they never died.
But once Godwyn the Golden saw his end, others followed. Heck, the player character delivered it to some of them. They kill Radahn, freeing him of that torment, and they even kill Malenia, ridding her of scarlet rot forever. This means the destined death is now back with vengeance for these gods and demigods.
But where did it come from? The rune of death is just a tool; it was locked away long ago. But where does that rune get its power? A fan theory by an eagle-eyed fan calledChristopherGorlamisuggests that it comes from Messmer.

Yes, they suggest that Messmer is none other than the keeper of death in the world ofElden Ring.Maybe that’s why he is there too; he is locked and constrained, so his influence can be stopped from spreading.
They suggest that maybe he was banished once Marika took hold of the Lands Between. There can be many reasons for his banishment, but the biggest reason is the fact that destined death is needed to burn the thorns of the Erdtree. And he literally controls it; no matter who she is today, Marika was once a vessel for the greater will. And maybe she really wanted to protect the greater will. And protect she did, by banishing her son to a hidden land no one would ever see.
But players would soon enter this hidden domain, and they would face Messmer and uncover his secrets.
