The most important, (and difficult,) choice any player makes on a newElden Ringgame is which class to play as. Seeing as there are 10 different playable classes to choose from, it can be a tall order! Luckily, Elden Ring has something for any type of player, and the flexible game mechanics make customizing a unique buildeasierthan ever.
This guide will cover one of themost powerfulandbeginner-friendlyclasses: the Vagabond. So whether you are new to Souls-like games or you are a returning veteran, here is how to best build the Vagabond.

Getting Started
Base Stats
Upon reading each class' stats, most players would immediately recognize that the Vagabond stands out. Boasting extremely high starter numbers, it is no wonder why so many fans love the vagabond. That being said, there are still two areas where the Vagabond truly shines. AVeryhigh health pool (vigor,) and a massive strength level instantly place him under the “tank” category.
Intelligence
For those looking to play abeefy, hard-hitter, the Vagabond looks like the perfect fit.
Starter Loadout
Not only does the Vagabond begin with more-than-ideal stats, but he also comes equipped with some of the best starting equipment in the game. This kit includes theLongsword,Halberd, and theHeater Shield. The entire Vagabond Knight armor set is also included.
Generally, the Longsword is amoreeffective weapon than the Halberd, but both can still pack a punch! Do not hesitate to utilize the Heater Shield as well, as it has a 100% damage reduction thatpairs perfectlywith the Vagabond’s high endurance.

Realistically, theGolden Seedis the only keepsake that should be considered. Any other item becomes obsolete very shortly into the game. However if necessary the stonesword key can be relatively useful.
Important Gear
One of the best things about playing as the Vagabond is that his gear stays viablelongafter leaving the starting area. Never be afraid to use smithing stones on any of the starting items! It is recommended however to look for new ashes of war for both the shield and longsword.
The Warmaster’s Shack located in North Limgrave offers amultitudeof effective ashes of war that can be placed on the Vagabond’s melee weapons. Make this an early priority!

Averysolid early weapon is theLordsworn’s Greatsword. It is able to be used effectively after only two points are put into the strength stat (16,) and works wonders against early-game enemies. Plus, its massive critical damage is a perfect compliment to those who can master parrying and backstabbing.
The Lordsworn’s Great sword can be found in the back of a wagon near the Gatefront Ruins.

Leveling Up
A good rule of thumb for leveling up the vagabond is to keep the ratios similar to how he started. In other words, keep the vigor, strength, and dex stats high!Neverwaste any precious runesleveling upmana-based stats such as faith or intelligence. It is also not necessary to level up arcane too much, as a vast amount of the items to be found in the game are already effective with the Vagabond.
Keep in mind, it isnot advisedto try to use magic as the Vagabond. However, for players whotrulywant some sort of incantation or spell available, it doesn’t make a difference whether you choose to pursue faith orintelligence. Both are going to be equally difficult to build. That being said, there are a multitude of early intelligence-based spells, and only a few early spells that are faith-based.

How To Play
Normally, there are two ways the Vagabond is played. The choice is between a full-on heavy tank, or a more passive damage dealer.
To play in a moretank-likefashion equip heavy armor, great swords, and shields. Unfortunately, this will greatly reduce the effectiveness of the dodge-roll, but your shield should make up for it. It iscriticalhowever that you keep an eye on your stamina when playing this way, as getting staggered will leave you extremely vulnerable. As previously mentioned, try to master both the parry and the backstab.
To play in a more passive manner, it is going to be important to carry a lighter load. Of course, the vagabond is still a tank, but it is important to be able to roll relatively quickly. Aim to keep your equip loadbelow70%, and you should be capable of pulling off an effective dodge-roll. While you may not be able to as much damage-per-second as the beefier tank counterpart, playing in this manner will allow for a more versatile fighting style and is a bit safer.
