Elden Ring’s singing bats song is both strangely calming alluring, but the translated English lyrics reveal a far more tragic tale in the creature’s lore.
Swooping down onto the player in a flurry of song and poison,Elden Ring’ssinging batshave plagued players with sudden attacks. Though, as difficult to fight as they may be, players are captivated by their mysterious song. Their lament, sung in Latin, is both calming and haunting, leading many to wonder what exactly the song means.
Recently, Twitter user@Chinchillazlllashared the full English translation behind the singing bat’s tune. The song, actuallytranslated by Reddit users u/Nyrun and u/MAGISTER-ORGANI, reveals a backstory full of pain and deep tragedy.
THE REAL MEANING BEHINDELDEN RING’S SINGING BATS SONG
@Chinchillazilla shared the below tweet on April 25th, surprised that the singing bats actually utilize a real-life language: Latin. Of course, like many things in FromSoftware’s games, it comes as no surprise that even these enemies suffer from the events of the world.
The song’s original English translation actually comes from the investigation of Reddit users u/Nyrun and u/MAGISTER-ORGANI. Through their combined efforts and knowledge, the two were able to obtain a copy of the official Latin lyrics from Nóra Csádi, the vocalist who performed the song for the game. Here is the Full English translation of the bats’Song of Lament, composed by Tsukasa Saitoh:
O that land, formerly blessed now withered.
We had been destined for motherhood,But now have become disfigured.
We wailed and weptBut no one comforts us.
Golden one, at whom were you so angry?
Fascinated by the creatures' alluring song, u/Nyrun and u/MAGISTER-ORGANI partnered up to accurately create an English translation for the song. u/MAGISTER-ORGANI’s work centered on providing a correct transcription of the song (and in that, discovered that it actually utilized some strange pronunciations of Latin words), while the both of them worked on interpreting the ancient language.
In u/MAGISTER-ORGANI’s video, they theorize that these singing bats may once have been brides who eventually became Tarnished. Paying for their sins or the sins of their partners, these harpies are now destined to roam the lands as a humanoid monster. Additionally, the reference to the “Golden One” could refer to Radahn or Malenia; this might explain why these bats remain hostile to other Tarnished, or anyone who tries to repair the world for the gods who destroyed it in the first place.
