The proper introduction of Dragon to the series occurred after the events of Enies Lobby when Garp revealed to Luffy that Dragon was his father and the commander of the Revolutionary Army. Dragon had first appeared in the show during the Loguetown arc, where he saved Luffy from Smoker. From then on, Dragon has gradually gained more prominence, and it becomes clear that he plays a significant role in the series.

As the series moves towards its conclusion, Dragon will undoubtedly be a pivotal figure to watch out for. Viewers have always been curious about Dragon’s relationship with Luffy and the reasons behind his initial abandonment. And it looks like Eiichiro Oda has finally provided an answer to this query.

Dragon’s Relationship With Luffy inOne Piece

Dragon was absent from Luffy’s life, as the series makes clear, and no matter what he accomplished in life, Dragon failed as a parent. From the time of Luffy’s birth until now, Dragon has not participated in his upbringing in any way. Luffy doesn’t even recognize Dragon.

Luffy was shocked to learn that he even had a father when he first heard about him. Given that Luffy has no recollections of Dragon, it is likely that Dragon was never present during his early years. Dragon kept the existence of his son a secret from everyone.

It wasn’t until much later in the narrative that his closest friends, Kuma and Ivankov, learned about Luffy. Dragon has his reasons, no matter how valid, but none of them can excuse leaving their child behind and not even accepting him in public. And now Oda may have given away the reason why Dragon abandoned Luffy in the first place.

Reason Behind Monkey D. Dragon Abandoning Luffy

The reason Dragon left Luffy was disclosed by Oda inOne Piecechapter 1101. When Kuma first saw Luffy train in the flashback, he was sailing around Foosha Village in the East Blue. Kuma was watching Luffy very closely.

A little while later, Kuma experiences a flashback in which he and Dragon are watching Luffy. Dragon interrupted Kuma’s questioning by saying that he should continue talking if he wanted to kill him. Kuma was pretty perplexed by this and asked Dragon what he meant by it, to which Dragon replied that kids are a parent’s weakness.

This suggests that Dragon purposefully chose to cut Luffy out of his life to protect him and prevent Luffy from being a weakness against Dragon during his revolution. Although it was a noble deed, Dragon being absent from Luffy’s life can not be justified. If Dragon had been in Luffy’s life, maybe the story would have taken a different turn.
