Destiny 2’sthird Act of Episode Heresy has concluded, meaning there will be a brief lull in new content untilMay 6th, 2025, when the new Rite of Nine event releases.
On the weekly Tuesday reset on April 22nd, 2025, players inDestiny 2noticed a strange phenomenon:mysterious chess pieces had popped up in various locationsand activities in the game world.

Here’s how you can fully upgrade your new favorite exotic SMG.
As of the writing of this guide, we don’t know what purpose these chess pieces serve other than tocomplete a series of triumphs to earn Strange Coinsand to kill time during this content drought during the lull of Episode Heresy Act 3.
Still, completionists among you will no doubt want tocollect all 60 of them.Thankfully, all it takes is some sleuthing. Nocrazy puzzles required.Here’s a comprehensive guide to finding every single chess piece.

Eris’s Apartment
There are a total offour chess pieces in Eris’s apartment.
There are two in her flat, and the other two are in the building’s staircases and corridors.
Collect the first two.One is sitting on a deskin the living room, andthe other is right next to the Shaping Slab.
Then,backtrack out of her flat and through the corridor.You’ll see two civilians talking near a dark corner of the hallway.Turn right and you’ll see a set of stairs.Climb up and you’ll find the third chess piece.
Proceed downstairs until you arrive at the apartment’s “reception,“where a sweeper bot is cleaning the floor. Another chess piece should be right there.
There are three chess pieces at the Tower.
The first one will bein the Hangarand will require some jumping, as it is in thesecret Future War Cult room.
To get there, you’ll need toclimb up a series of stairs that will take you near the ceiling,where you’ll arrive at some air ducts. Climb through those, and you’ll find your first chess piece.
The next one is in the main Tower area. Go right past Banshee, and you’ll find acargo elevator.
Ride it down to the bottom-most floor, and go through the doorway toZavala’s office.The chess piece is to your right,tucked into a shelf.
The third one isin the Annex, near the Drifter.No, Drifter–for the last time, I’m not going to play Gambit.
Two chess pieces are hidden in the EDZ, and are quite easy to find.
The first one is at theWinding Cove, right on top of the cliffoverlooking the area. Simply climb up and you’ll find it.
The next one is at theSludge, at the entrance to the Dark Forest.
Once you spawn in, travel all the way to where you see a group of Cabal, and turn right into a narrow nook.Go through the corridor and you’ll see a dark portal.The chess piece is right next to it.
Two more chess pieces are hidden on Europa.
One is at theBeyond, right behind Elsie.You won’t miss it.
The second one is a bit of a trek. Go to theBray Exoscience facility, all the way to where Clovis Bray is.The chess piece will be right in front of him on a pedestal.
The Nether
Now this will make up the bulk of your time searching for thenext 33 chess pieces,as most of them will be scattered throughoutthe Nether.
The Founts area has been added as a spawn point in the rotation,so if you don’t feel like playing through multiple rounds of the Nether, then here’s what I suggest:play through one round of the Nether (preferably in a Private instance so that you can take your time),then keep reloading the activity until you get the remaining location.
The Hull Breach location has also been added to the rotation, so you might need a few more tries to get the exact location you want.
The Founts
There areseven in The Founts.We’ll be covering them in the order in which I found them. Let’s assume you’re facing the direction of the giant sealed gate. The area you spawn in and enter via the Mausoleum will be called the “right” side.
Because the chess pieces count as collectibles much like Osseous Fragments, they will appear on your minimap as markers. If the instructions below aren’t clear enough, then keep an eye out for the markers.
If you spawned in, you’ll see three rows of “doors” jutting out of the wall to the left.Climb up to the second row, and you’ll find a chess piece.
Continueonwards down the corridor until you arrive near a corner with a large brass pipe. Climb up the pipe, and there will be a hole in the ceiling where the chest is.There is a chess piece behind that chest.
Next, exit and turn left, and make your way up the stairs to the left side of the area.Climb up the “doors” and you’ll see a hole in the ceiling.There’s a chest in that nook.
There is a chess piecenear the tentacles at the top of the area, near a ledge.
There’s anotheron a Taken tentacle to the right of the sealed gate.
The next one should be located on thebottom floor on the left side, near a door frame.
Finally, there should be asmall, halfway-opened door nearby with a weapon chest inside.A chess piece should be there.
There arefive chess piecesin the Mausoleum.
Two are immediately near you where you would normally spawn, one of which is right behind you, and the other is a little bit farther back, hidden in a corner.
The third one ison top of some rocks as you jump down into the pitwhere the tentacles are.
You’ll also find another one at thevery back of the arena, where you would fight the Taken Ogre area boss.Jump onto the ledge and you’ll find it tucked in a corner.
The last chess piece in the Mausoleum is atthe very end of the region.Go all the way to thecrashed Skyburner ship,where you would normally grab a solar crystal. Jump on top of the ship’s ledge, and you’ll find achess piece hidden in a nook.
There arefive chess pieces in the Trenchway.
Immediately when you spawn (look right then down) or when you enter (over the ledge), there is a chess piecehiding on top the peeling shell of the Dreadnaught.
Another one is immediatelystraight ahead of where you spawn, near the dead Skyburner Cabal.
Go all the way to the other side of the area, where you would normally find a hidden brazier boss. A chess piece is right under a long ledge.
Enter the Dreadnaught and through the Trenchway.There’s a chess piece on that nook up to the left.Just climb up the vanishing platforms, and you’ll see a claw-like panel that you’re able to activate. The chess piece is right behind it.
While you’re here, if you have “Rites of the Deep Tithe Found Worthy,” you can activate that and claim a chess piece from the secret.
Finally, the last chess piece in the Trenchway islocated on the other side of the trench, where you would find the secret Ogre boss.
The chess piece will be sitting conspicuously near where the Ogre would spawn.
Hall Of Souls
There areseven in the Hall of Souls.This will probably be the most annoying area to find chess pieces. Buckle up.
The first one will be on awall that you’ll have to climb up, to the left of the area where you normally spawn.
Jump down and proceed left, where you’ll find abig pillar.You can jump up, and the chess piece is right in the middle.
Go back to where you came from, and there will bea doorway to a small room with a crawlspace.Enter the dark crawlspace and keep goinguntil you see a slope. A chess piece should be at the top of that slope.
Continue onwards until you leave the dark area, and you’ll emerge where you might encounter a large Taken blight, or you just seewalls that look like a wasp nest.
Jump onto the chitin peeling off the wall below a platform, and you’ll see a chess piece on a ledge. Pick that up.
Continue to the area where you may have a Hive Relic encounter.There’s a doorway in the far back which you can go through.
Immediately look back to the right and you’ll see another chess piece.
There’s a chess piece tucked between the Hive statuesin the corridor leading to the Court of Oryx.
The final chess piece is difficult to get to, as this is purely based on RNG.Go to the center area, where you fight the Subjugator boss.
Climb up the crag and pull out your Ghost.If the vanishing platforms are there, follow them up, and you’ll eventually find the chess piece.
If not, then it’s best to use a sword to traverse up the pipes.
Nine chess pieces can be discovered bycompleting almost any secret in The Nether.
As far as we know, chess pieces spawn randomly as rewards, but arethankfully rather frequent.
Court Of Blades
There are five chess pieces in theCourt of Bladesactivity. Just boot up the activity, and you’ll be able to get these chess pieces pretty easily.
There’s one in each combat arena:
you’re able to acquire another chess piece bypurchasing Runic Upgrades, and one more bycompleting the activity.
The Taken Path
There are six chess pieces for going on the Taken Path;three for Path of Ambition, and three more for Path of Resolve.
All you need to do isplay the game normally while going on either path.Consuming the Taken balls on the Path of Ambition will give you a chance of acquiring a chess piece, same goes for shooting a ball of Sigil Shards while on the Path of Resolve.
Once you’ve gotten three,switch to the next paththe next time you’re in Eris’s apartment.
Lastly,the Drifter will give you five chess piecesas you progress through your chess piece collection.
Justkeep collecting all your chess pieces until you’ve hit around 55, then go talk to the Drifter, and he’ll give you the chess pieces.
