Watching Christopher Nolan’sInceptionundoubtedly left viewers at the edge of their seats and mind-blown at the same time, with thoughts of how brilliant he wrote the script and directed the film. As a fan, one would believe there’s no other movie in the world that can match its cleverness.

But wait – we’re forgetting something from the past. Remember Dennis Quaid’s 1984 dark science-fiction adventure filmDreamscapehelmed by Joseph Ruben? It’s definitely cut and woven from the same fabric asInception, or is it the other way around?
Dennis Quaid’sDreamscapeDared To Push The Limits Of The Imagination
In celebration of its 40th anniversary, Joseph Ruben’sDreamscapestarringDennis Quaidis the type of film that most audiences would call ambitious. Its storyline is quite complicated for the unassuming minds, but it was genius and creative nonetheless.
InDreamscape, Quaid’s Alex Gardner is a psychic whose interest revolves around using his power to win money and women. Of course, one would say he’s only wasting his God-given talent if he’s not using it for something larger than life. So, when two academics invited him to join in on a science experiment that could potentially treat sleeping disorders, that’s when the fun began.

Or, maybe not-so-fun at all. When the project was hijacked by a government agent, he was in for a ride that would see the most horrific nightmares of people, including a young boy whose dreams are infiltrated by snakes and a large half-man half-reptile creature.
He was also tasked to look into the dreams of a man who believes his wife was cheating, only to witness the most outrageous dreams involving bacchanals with a priest and his own brother.

It is safe to say that it tried to venture into horizons that are deemed too risky and most filmmakers won’t even dare to tackle. Some scenes are definitely not going to fly today, like the time Gardner attempted to enterKate Capshaw’s Jane DeVries’ dream to have s*x with her, but that’s the whole point of the movie.
“Those are far and few between”: Christopher Nolan Has 1 Condition to Direct a Horror Movie in the Future That Would Upset Fans
It pushed the boundaries ofscience fictionwhile trying to play with the possibilities of psychic phenomena. It’s a complete package of espionage, romance drama, horror, and sometimes even comedy. What more can the audience ask for?
Christopher Nolan’sInceptionIsn’t Entirely Original
Not many people rememberDreamscape, but that should change now. It’s time to rediscover this forgotten gem of science fiction which undoubtedly – and perhaps unknowingly – inspired many filmmakers today.
EvenChristopher Nolanmay not say, but fellow directorJohn Landisknew what’s up. He notably toldObsessed With Film(viaDigital Spy) that “Inception, which is wonderful, is not original” and that there are other films similar to it.

“You’re getting warned to keep your mouth shut”: Dennis Quaid Couldn’t Care Less About Getting Canceled By Hollywood Amid Backlash on His Biopic Film ‘Reagan’
He specifically mentionedDreamscape, and despite its terrible special effects, it is just the same movie, only a bit less “stylish”. So, there it is – Nolan’sInceptionperhaps doesn’t sound too original now at this point.
DreamscapeandInceptionare available on Prime Video as of August 13, 2025.
