David Chase, the creator and writer ofThe Sopranos, reflected on his journey and creative process behind the award-winning show in HBO’sWise Guy: David Chase and The Sopranos, a two-part original documentary. Starring James Gandolfini, the television behemoth ran for six seasons from 1999 to 2007, and because of its popularity, a prequel came to life.

Unlike the highly acclaimed series, 2021’sThe Many Saints of Newarkwas slammed by critics and fans, and Chase admitted he was responsible for the mistakes, though he also pointed his finger at the marketing department.
David Chase Opened Up About The Failure OfThe Many Saints of Newark
The Many Saints of Newarkwas promoted as the origin story of youngTony Sopranoand his mentor, Dickie Moltisanti.David Chaseinitially did not want to make a movie based on the famed television series out of respect for its legacy, but when he finally caved in, he learned it was the biggest mistake of his career.
James Gandolfini’s son, Michael, portrayed the younger version of him in the prequel. The reviews were average, but it failed to churn a profit at the box office. It struggled to get more viewers despite the popularity of the series mainly because of negative reception: the fans were allegedly deceived by the studio’s promotion.

In the documentary (viaUSA Today), Chase admitted his own fault: “I made some mistakes in the conception phase and in the writing phase.” He wanted to create a gangster film about Dickie Moltisanti, but somehow it ended up as an origin tale of Tony Soprano, at least in the promotional materials.
“The worst part was what the marketing department did,” he said about the alleged deception of fans who went to watch the film and got disappointed. He was scrutinized by the public and even accused of making the movie for a cash grab, which he firmly disclaimed.
